[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this shot in the Western Desert area of Sudan. We were in a 4x4s, camping, using GPS and came across this amazing desert area – mainly Erg (sandy desert) with a few rocky outcrops. We were about 8 hours drive from anything resembling a road. This was part of the same trip where I took the gorilla, hippo and lion shot (ie Rwanda and Uganda as well)

I took this shot because I liked the way that the sand ripples mirrored the cirrus clouds. I broke the rule of thirds deliberately to try and enhance the mirror effect. I think it sort of works – let me know.

The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert, and second largest desert after Antarctica (deserts are defined by rainfall received). At over 9,000,000 km˛ (3,500,000 sq mi), it is almost as large as the United States, and is larger than the 48 contiguous states. The Sahara is located in North Africa and may be as much as 2.5 million years old, however, it is one of the youngest deserts in the world, expanding rapidly at the end of the last Ice-Age. The name is an English rendition of as-ṣaḥrā, the Arabic word for "desert"

Hello James,
I immediately recognized the symmetry between the patterns in the sand and the cirrus clouds before reading your well-written note. So, the composition certainly works for me. Maybe a polarizer could bring out the sky more. Independent of the excellent photo, I notice some vignetting and softness in corners and edges, possibly due to the 35 mm format.

Beautiful colour and texture. Great sharpness. Maybe a horizontal crop would have been better? If you have a similar shot in the horizontal I'd like to see it. Well done anyhow.

Wow James a superb shot and with the ultimate machine a 1DsMkII! the detail in the dunes are beautifull Well composed shot nice light. I bet the original is awsome. Wonder if a ND grad filter would have helped a bit in the sky exposure. Some amazing works in your portfolio tfs rgds Necip.

This is indeed a magnificent shot!
These ripples on the sand do indeed resemble the small clouds from the sky! What an interesting thing ;)
The colors and exposure is your shot are fantastic and excellently well balanced.
The details everywhere are very beautiful and sharp and the presentation is lovely.
Initially i wasn't sire of the 50-50 composition, but then, after reading your notes and taking a second look over the elements of both the sand and the sky, i agree with you and since it's a "mirror" effect, the 50-50 works best!

At first I have to say that it is really nice to see your pictures. I really like to watch "diversity" of places which you have visited :) And this one is another example.
Desert picture from Sudan is really nice. I like colours of this photo + its good DOF and contrast between sand and blue sky.
