[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Bob has been commenting on some of my landform shots - so this one is for him.

The view is of a dune in the Western Desert of Sudan, taken about 13 months ago. It was late afternoon. What the image shows is a linear dune moving - if you look carefully the main ridge is fuzzy where the sand is blowing up and over the dune, from right to left. In the lee of the dune (the left) there is a distinct break in slope and colour. The lighter, steeper part is where the dune is moving - grains are rolling down it, the lighter particles are then lifted again and the heavier darker particles are left behind.

The sky is showing an approaching depression - these are the high cirrus clouds which herald the arrival of a front in several hours time - it arrived next morning.

In physical geography, a dune is a hill of sand built by eolian (wind) processes. Dunes are subject to different forms and sizes based on their interaction with the wind. Most kinds of dune are longer on the windward side where the sand is pushed up the dune, and a shorter "slip face" in the lee of the wind. The "valley" or trough between dunes is called a slack. A "dune field" is an area covered by extensive sand dunes. Large dune fields are known as ergs.

Some coastal areas have one or more sets of dunes running parallel to the shoreline directly inland from the beach. In most such cases the dunes are important in protecting the land against potential ravages by storm waves from the sea. Although the most widely distributed dunes are those associated with coastal regions, the largest complexes of dunes are found inland in dry regions and associated with ancient lake or sea beds.

Dunes also form under the action of water flow (alluvial processes), on sand or gravel beds of rivers, estuaries and the sea-bed.

The modern word "dune" came into English from French circa 1790 but it's an old Indo-European word that's found in most of the Slavic languages as well as the Germanic and Latin languages. In ancient times words cognate to "dune" probably had the meaning of a citadel or built-up hill fortification

Hi James. I would just love to run down the sand and put some foot prints into it. This is fantastic. It look straight out of Lawerence of Arabria .as you say in you notes its on the move all the time. warm colours and fine detail . well done TFS. great notes too.

A very beautiful photo James. A great shot of the earth and sky with absolutely the right colors. I was travelling last month and was in a dessert in india. Captured a lot of dunes but no where close to what you 've been able to achieve.

This picture is taken superbly...The whole concept of wind moving tons of sand and creating fascinating details is most mesmerising...I suspect the closest we get to this in the UK is snow drifts...but maybe leaves in autumn are governed by a similar process.

Hello James,

What a beautiful landscape you created for Egshannon. We know also sanddunes in Holland, but not this size and they are always planted to minimize dusting. The colors and the details are amazing. POV, DOF and BG are good. I read somewhere that the walking sanddunes are dangerous. When you try to climb up to the top the sand is moving under your feets. Thanks for sharing. You're really pumping out the geology now. I appreciate the gentle curves, having lived near one of the worlds largest moving sand dunes....and only with film cameras and low income. Wis I could try some of this type of image now....although you and Heaven seem very adept at patterns in nature and the particular softness in some of them.

This is simple but amazingly beautiful!
I love everything here - to the smallest detail!
The small waves on the dune - right ion the FG - are really great and very photogenic. The curve that the dune makes is excellent and i think it's the element that makes you composition. The light here is also exceptional and it gives you the right amount of contrast. Last but not least, the beautiful blue sky with its small clouds, adding a bit of cooler colors to the "hot" ones of the sand.
On top of all that, a great note on the general characteristics and history of dunes and a beautiful dedication to our good friend Bob.

A wonderful photo. The cruve of the dune is perfectly positioned and draw the eye towards the distance. The difference in the texture caused by the rolling of the grains are roling make this photo so much more interesting. I like the perfect contrast between the blue sky and yellow sand.
