Les gnous sont des espèces d'antilope ; ils sont herbivores et vivent en troupeaux en Afrique. Ce sont des mammifères ongulés. On rencontre des gnous en Afrique du Sud, au Kenya et en Tanzanie.

Ils vivent généralement 20 ans et pèsent environ 250 kilogrammes. Il y a deux espèces:

* Gnou noir ou gnou à queue blanche (en Afrique du sud seulement) (Connochaetes gnou)
* Gnou bleu (dans la plupart de l'Afrique, sauf au cap) (Connochaetes taurinus)

Les gnous sont sédentaires sauf si la nourriture devient insuffisante. Ils effectuent alors des migrations saisonnières importantes. Durant ce voyage des zèbres, gazelles et élands les accompagnent formant des rassemblements de plus de 2 millions de têtes.

Le gnou noir est en grave danger d'extinction.

La femelle du gnou est encore appelée la maroufle, et les petits sont des gaous. Les gaous naissent généralement en février. Ils deviennent alors une proie facile pour les prédateurs, bien qu'ils soient capable de courir 3 minutes après leur naissance.

Pour séduire les femelles, les gnous poussent des coassements et se battent entre eux. Lorsqu'un mâle est très dominant, il peut s'accoupler avec 150 femelles.

La viande du gnou est très appréciée des peuples autochtones. Elle est tendre et légère. Les cornes sont utilisées pour la sculpture ou encore pour leur qualité aphrodisiaque.

Les gnous sont la proie des lions, des hyènes, des chiens sauvages et autres prédateurs de Tanzanie et du Kenya. Les gnous en migration se rassemblent pour traverser les cours d'eau et représentent ainsi un terrain de chasse exceptionnel.

The female of the gnou is still called the strong paste, and the small ones are gaous. The gaous are generally born in February. They then become an easy prey for the predatory ones, although they are able to run 3 minutes after their birth. To allure the females, the gnous push croakings and fight between them. When a male is very dominating, it can be coupled with 150 females.
The meat of the gnou is very appreciated people autochtones. It is tender and light. The horns are used for the sculpture or for their aphrodisiac quality. The gnous are the prey of the lions, the hyenas, the wild dogs and other predatory of Tanzania and of Kenya.
The gnous in migration gather to cross the rivers and thus represent an exceptional hunting ground.
