Les hyènes (rayée ou tachetée), qui composent la famille des hyénidés (Hyaenidae), sont des carnivores terrestres de grande taille. Bien que la hyène ressemble à un gros chien, elle fait partie d'une famille biologique séparée. (A leur naissance, les hyènes ressemblent très fort à des petits chiens avec toutefois une différence importante : des oreilles rondes). Elle est connue pour son cri ressemblant à un rire désagréable qui signifie qu'elle a trouvé de la nourriture.

On les trouve en Afrique sub-saharienne, principalement dans la savane et près de points d'eau.
Elles ont un aspect trapu avec un arrière-train tombant. Leur pelage peut être rayé ou tacheté et d'une couleur tirant sur le marron. Elles mesurent selon les espèces de 95 cm à 165 cm (pour la hyène tachetée) de long, pour un poids variant de 15 à 85 kg. La gestation est d'environ 110 jours. Les petits seront allaités jusqu'à un an et demi.


The hyenas (striped or mottled), which make the family of hyénidés (Hyaenidae), are terrestrial carnivores of big size. Although the hyena resembles a large dog, it forms part of a separate biological family. (A their birth, the hyenas resemble very extremely puppies with however an important difference: round ears). It is known for its cry resembling an unpleasant laughter which means that it found food.
One finds them in sub-Saharan Africa, mainly in the savanna and close to water points. They have a squat aspect with a falling rear-axle unit. Their peeling can be striped or mottled and of a color drawing on chestnut. They measure according to species' of 95 cm to 165 cm (for the hyena mottled) length, for a varying weight from 15 to 85 kg. Gestation is approximately 110 days. The small ones will be nursed up to one year and half.
