Zebra is cousin of horse. It is the only big mammal in white and black stripes. It has a crest and tail. Zebra is the nicest of all allied animals. It is long 2 meters and 20 cm(plus 75 cm. long tail) and heigh 1,25 - 1,35 meters. The weight of zebras is 225-420 kg. They live 20-40 years(in zoo).
Zebra lives in flocks of many animals(sometimes in the dry season - thousands of zebras in one flock) In the flock lives one male and some females with their cubs i.e. around 15 animals.
There are three species of zebras. The first species lives in Sudan near Zambezi river. The other species lives in Ethiopia, Somalia and Tansania and the third species lives in Africa mountains.
Zebras can gallop on long distance. Their enemies are lions, wild dogs, leopards. Zebras have good hearing and sense of smell.

I watched a program not too long ago that said stripes are much like snowflakes - no two are the same. Knowing that, and seeing how close you managed to get, I have to agree. I could get dizzy if I studied this long enough. :)

The DOF is nailed. The POV is different, but I like it. The white isn't hot and I love the details of his/her mouth. I love the tiny wrinkles on the mouth, almost as if it has either frowned one time too many or smiled a lot. Either way, I love how it stimulates my imagination!

Your notes are terrific; they added to what little knowledge I already had. I don't see these critters too often, so thanks for posting.

The zebra is an attractive animal Stefan, and this one and his perfect stripes are great to see.
All his wrinkles show up on his side and neck - that is strange to see. You have captured him really well.
And what a profile - very majestic

Stefan,

I love how the zebra stands out from the background. The contrasts work very well in this shot. Very nicely composed, great exposure and detail. TFS.

Hi Stefan

A lovely zebra specimen from the Ngorongoro crater. Zebras are one of my favourites and I can spend hours watching these beautiful animals. You have captured this one well with the profile portrait. Nice details are visible with great colour definition (yes, even though it is only a black-&-white animal). The long lens and the narrow DOF have assisted you well to make sure that the BG was completely isolated and nicely OOF.

You notes refers to 3 species of zebra, but actually there are 8 different zebras, of which 5 is in the so-called group of the Plains Zebra, also referred to as Burchell's zebra. Some sources have the species name as "quagga" though. These are:

Grant's zebra - Equus burchellii boehmi
Upper Zambezi zebra - Equus burchellii zambesiensis
Crawshay's zebra - Equus burchellii crawshayi
Chapman's zebra - Equus burchellii chapmanni
Damara zebra - Equus burchellii antiquorum

Then there are the 2 mountain zebras that do not form part of the above group.

Cape mountain zebra - Equus zebra zebra
Hartman's zebra - Equus zebra hartmannae

And the last one which is separately listed.

Grevy's zebra - Equus grevyi

Well captured and TFS.
Regards
Loot
