Le poids du léopard (Panthera pardus) adulte varie entre 35 à 80 kg et sa longueur varie de 90 cm à 1,60 m et jusqu’à 1,90 m pour la sous-espèce africaine. Sa hauteur au garrot varie entre 50 et 70 cm et sa queue peut mesurer jusqu'à 100 cm, queue qui lui sert notamment de balancier lorsqu'il se déplace dans les arbres. La femelle est en général plus petite que le mâle. Sa longévité est d'une dizaine d'années dans la nature alors que certaines panthères atteignent aisément les 20 ans en captivité.

Le léopard est un animal exclusivement solitaire sauf durant la saison des amours (environ 15 jours par an), le mâle et la femelle se supportent durant ce court laps de temps pour s'accoupler. La période de gestation est de trois mois et demi et la femelle peut mettre bas de 2 à 3 petits.

Le corps du léopard le favorise pour grimper aux arbres : il a un thorax puissant et des pattes bien développées. La puissance de ses omoplates l'aide aussi à grimper.

Il mange dans les arbres, où il est à l'abri des charognards.
