Todays post is Purple Grenadier captured in Tanzania summer 2005. This is my first post of trhis bird here on TN.
We made stop on the way to Serengeti and I found this guy and few more birds behind WC, which was under construction. This stones was building material and place with insects and in that chase birds too. As I already said before in my privous posts I have always camera with me :)

The Purple Grenadier (Uraeginthus ianthinogaster) is a common species of estrildid finch found in eastern Africa.
The length averages 13.3 cm (5.25 in). All ages and sexes have a black tail, and adults have a red bill. The male has a cinnamon-colored head and neck with a blue patch surrounding the eye. The rump is purplish blue and the underparts are violet-blue with variable rufous patches. The female is smaller and mostly cinnamon brown with white barring on the underparts and silver-blue eyepatches. Juveniles are like females, but mostly unbarred tawny-brown with a reddish-brown bill.

The song (in Kenya) is described as "a high, thin chit-cheet tsereea-ee-ee tsit-tsit, or cheerer cheet tsee-tsee sur-chit.
It is found in subtropical and tropical (lowland) dry shrubland in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, an estimated global extent of occurrence of 1,500,000 km².

Hello Ralf,
What a splendid bird that I can't recall having seen before! Even though part of the tail is cut off it is a very sharp profile of this bird in its bright plumage. The stony background makes it stand out very nicely.
Many thanks and ha det jättebra i Spanien! Ulla

An extremely beautiful bird from Tanzania, Ralf. You have taken a clever shot from a perspective that shows its magnificent colours and features very effectively. I like the plumage of this bird a lot.
TFS and regards.

Hi Ralf!
As I can see for last several weeks bird watching and bird photography is your favourite part of nature obsevration :) I am not a good ornitologist but still I like a lot to watch good quality pictures with known or - better ;> - unknown species for me. And here we have another interesting and firstly seen by me species. Very colourful, presented from good POV, with good DOF and details. And that is really all what I need to feel good watching picture! :>
Best greetings,
Radomir
