The Giant Kingfisher, Megaceryle maxima, is the largest kingfisher in Africa, where it is a resident breeding bird over most of the continent south of the Sahara Desert other than the arid southwest.
There are two subspecies, M. m. maxima, found in open country, and M. m. gigantea in the rainforest. The forest race is darker, less spotted above, and more barred below than maxima, but the two forms intergrade along the forest edge zone.
Breeding is from August to January, 3-5 eggs being laid in a riverbank tunnel.
Giant Kingfisher is 42-46 cm long, with a large crest and finely spotted white on black upperparts. The male has a chestnut breast band and otherwise white underparts with dark flank barring, and the female has a white-spotted black breast band and chestnut belly.
The call is a loud wak wak wak.
This large species feeds on crabs, fish, and frogs, caught in the typical kingfisher way by a dive from a perch. The number of these birds appears to have declined, possibly as a result of pesticides.

Hi Aivar,

This is a wonderful capture. You got him very sharp and the colours are satured.TFS.

regards,
Zeno.

Hi Aivar,

Excellent shot and well done on the composition.
My only concern is, your white balance is on the cold side. To bring out the warmth for outdoors, "Shade" even in full sunlight. Just from experience. ;) :)
In photoshop if you have it, select filters, add a yellow filter, and if you want add a 81b warming filter. play with levels or selective colors of neutral and black.
Here's a w.s.

Mike

Hi Aivair. This is a great bird, it looks lovely. I can't say I have seen it before. So you saw this one in the wild? Fantastic! POV, DOF and composition are very good. Exposure is also very decent when taking into consideration that this was shot late in the evening. The back of the stone and a little part of the tail seems a wee bit oe, but nothing serious. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hello Aivar, good to see a post from you again..
Well composed with very good light, color, and sharp detail.
Great POV and he looks pretty cool sitting on the rock here.. I think Mike's WS is an excellent variation, but color can be considered a matter of taste at times..You know, some like it hot ;))
Very well done.

Hi Aivar,
An excellent capture on this Giant Kingfisher. Superb frame filling composition with tack sharp detail. Nice control on the DOF for a pleasing OOF backround. Nice camera work!

Hello Aivar,
He looks quite refreshed, unlike me while I endure the Texas summer... This is really interesting as I didn't know about these species, they're very big and I think the subspecies names are very appropriate. A nice shot with good detail (just a little soft on the body I think from camera movement at 1/60 second). A great exposure and great colours that give us a wonderful clear view of this unusual bird. A really interesting post, thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Adrian

Excellent capture the details are very nice showing off this beautiful kingfisher nicely. Glad to see you back. :)
