I took this picture in January at sunrise in Murchison Falls National Park, using my 300mm lense and 1.4x converter.

This is Jackson's Hartebeest which is endemic to Uganda (according to what little I can find about it - it isn't even listed in Wiki). The Hartebeest sub-species differ according to the head shape and colour of the coat.

The Hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus) is a grassland antelope found in West Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa. It is the only animal classified in the genus Alcelaphus.

The Hartebeest stands almost 1.5 m (5 ft) at the shoulder and weighs anywhere from 120-200 kg (265-440 lb). Male Hartebeest are a dark brown colour while females are yellow brown. Both sexes have horns which can reach lengths up to 70 cm (27 in). Hartebeest live in grassland and open forest where they eat grass. They are diurnal and spend the morning and late afternoon eating. Herds contain five to twenty individuals but can occasionally contain up to three hundred and fifty.

Hi James,
it's an ever surprise where the next location will be. It's just a small leap from spitsbergen to Uganda. THis is a very good picture of this hartebeest, with the background showing the wideness of the area. I allways wonderded why it is called hartebeest. Would that be related to a dutch name? Hartebeast could mean heart or hard animal. Anyhow, I don't see it.
Well seen and captured.
Regards, Jacob

Hello James,

Hi James,
A beautiful capture of this Antelope. Nice composition with very good details and well positioned in the frame. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Beautiful light. I like how the Hartebeest is placed in the tall grasses. The composition is also very good.

PS: I have been looking at your locations map... Impressive. Just a few countries in the world to complete the whole world..

great composition, TFS Ori

Hi James.
Sweet shot. I love it so much. So attractive animal. Its pose and glance are amazing. Your superb lens work is great too. Excellent details and sharpness of the animal image, lovely warm sunlight and dry grass colours. Superb three levels of sharpness-blurriness. Bravo and TFS.

Hi James

Thus far I thought I was doing "pretty" well, having visited and displaying photos from 4 of my country's 9 provinces (chuckle). That was of course until I came across your impressive list of 168 countries visited and displaying photos from 57 different countries on TN. Very impressive to say the least and probably the record holder on the site. Seems like you could qualify for the title "Global Citizen Numero Uno". Keep going man...

While working on my theme "African Rare Antelope" I found some interesting information on the "Hartebeest" which you might appreciate. The hartebeest group is something of a taxonomist's nightmare so I will not pretend to know much, but hopefully with this research I may provide a little insight related to these fascinating animals.

Order: Artiodactyla (even-toed ungulates).
Family: Bovidae (cloven-hoofed mammals).
Subfamily: Alcelaphinae (hartebeest, tsessebe, topi, bontebok, & wildebeest).

Genus Alcelaphus - "Common" Hartebeest group:
Red hartebeest - Alcelaphus buselaphus caama (substantial)
Western hartebeest - Alcelaphus buselaphus major (substantial)
Lelwel hartebeest - Alcelaphus buselaphus lelwel (substantial)
Coke's hartebeest - Alcelaphus buselaphus cokei (substantial)
Jackson's hartebeest - Alcelaphus buselaphus jacksoni (rare)
Tora hartebeest - Alcelaphus buselaphus tora (endangered)
Swayne's hartebeest - Alcelaphus buselaphus swaynei (endangered)

Genus Beatragus - Hirola:
Hunter's hartebeest - Beatragus hunteri (rare)

Genus Damaliscus - Species less commonly known as "Hartebeest"
Senegal hartebeest - Damaliscus lunatus korrigum (rare)
Tiang hartebeest - Damaliscus lunatus tiang (substantial)
This group also contains the closely related Tsessebe, Topi, Bontebok, and Blesbok.
Tsessebe - Damaliscus lunatus lunatus
Topi - Damaliscus lunatus jimela
Bontebok - Damaliscus dorcas dorcas
Blesbok - Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi

Genus Sigmoceros - Only one species:
Lichtenstein's hartebeest - Sigmoceros lichtensteini (substantial)
Some researchers suggest that there is some justification for including this as a subspecies of the Common hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus).

Genus Connochaetes - Wildebeest:
Black wildebeest - Connochaetes gnou
Blue wildebeest - Connochaetes taurinus

Anyway, back to your photo. I like the way you captured this guy between the tall grasses. Looking back over its shoulder and making eye contact adds to the impact of the shot. They have the most amazing yellow eyes. The exposure was well controlled and the colours are great.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
