Long-crested Eagle
The Long-crested Eagle (Lophaetus occipitalis) is a bird of prey. Like all eagles, it is in the family Accipitridae. It is currently placed in a monotypic genus Lophaetus.
A medium sized bird (about 55cm), found in Africa south of the Sahara, except in the arid zones. In southern Africa it is a fairly common resident in the eastern areas. It inhabits woodlands, exotic plantations, forest edges and mainly lives off rodents and shrews.

Range Description: This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 14,000,000 kmē. It has a large global population estimated to be 10,000-100,000 individuals (Ferguson-Lees et al. 2001). Global population trends have not been quantified, but there is evidence of a population increase (Ferguson-Lees et al. 2001), and so the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

He looks very happy up on the succulent plant.
I think he is too centred and I would have cropped off more from the right side of the photo - so there would be more space in front of him "to move into."
Still he's an attractive bird

Hi Ferran,

If I saw a bird like this sitting atop a cactus I would be thrilled. I don't remember seeing a crested Eagle before. He posed beautifully for you and I love the yellow eye. He must enjoy showing off that hair-do.
