[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I looked in the books and I thought that it are Tawny Eagles, if not I hope that you can help me.


The Tawny Eagle, Aquila rapax, is a large bird of prey. It is about 62–72 cm in length and has a wingspan of 165–185cm. Like all eagles, it belongs to the family Accipitridae. It breeds in most of Africa both north and south of the Sahara Desert and across tropical southwestern Asia to India. It is a resident breeder which lays 1–3 eggs in a stick nest in a tree, crag or on the ground.
Throughout its range it favours open dry habitats, such as desert, semi-desert, steppes, or savannah.
This is a large eagle with tawny upperparts and blackish flight feathers and tail. The lower back is very pale. This species is smaller and paler than the Steppe Eagle, although it does not share that species' pale throat.
Immature birds are less contrasted than adults, but both show a range of variation in plumage colour.
The Tawny Eagle's diet is largely fresh carrion of all kinds, but it will kill small mammals up to the size of a rabbit, reptiles and birds up to the size of guineafowl. It will also steal food from other raptors.
The call of the Tawny Eagle is a crow-like barking, but it is rather a silent bird except in display.

IK heb even de 'map' bekeken en daar heeft de Tawny eagle een bruine kleur. Kon echter verder geen alternatief vinden...

Hello Vivian,
I've looked in my raptors bible: Raptors of the world by J.Ferguson-Lees and D.A. Christie. It are undoubtedly pale adults Tawny Eagles. I think male (more contrast in the feathers) under and female above (a bit darker), but I'm not sure.
Excellent photo in great sharpness and details. Very beautiful natural colours and a nice POV. Good composition.

Hello Viv,
I took some time to decide whether these two were Tawny, or Steppe Eagles. My conclusion is that these are indeed a light phase of the Tawny Eagle, but Annick has a point!
Excellent capture of this pair in a natural environment with fine technical qualities.

Hi Viv
Lovely shot - very unusual to get two of these together. Detail is very good and setting is very natural. This is undoubtedly the Tawny - first sign to look for is that the yellow knape does not extend beyond the mid-point of the eye.

I like pictured scene so much. Two beautiful birds at impressive surroundings are looked perfectly. Excellent well balances vertical composition, unusual ("dry") and pleasant colou palette. TFS and kind regards. Nice work.
