[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Libelluid from South Africa. I've tried very hard indeed to ID this one using a key, but i still cannot be 100% sure of the species. If anyone is interested in helping with the ID I can tell you my problems :-)

This male dragonfly belongs to the subfamily Tritheminae and the genus Trithemis, these are included in the Libellulidae family which is one of the largest and widely represented dragonfly familes in the world. There are 954 listed species in this family and 58 of those occur in South Africa.

Libellulids are diverse in size, shape, colour and habits. Most are medium sized and sexually dimorphic with the male being the most colourful of the two. Most species in this family perch horizontally rather than hanging vertically when settling.

I hope you like the picture.

The notes and the key I used are from A fieldguide to the Dragonflies of South Africa Warwick & Michele Tarboton (Privately published).

Hi Paul,
This rivals Anna Lu's A Morning Gift...!
I never would have thought that I would have added a dragonfly to one of my favorites, but this one definitely is deserving...;-)
Very nice!
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Paul,
This one is really a suberb shot. I love the simple composition and clear blue sky backround. No distractions, everything forces you to focus on the dragon fly. The exposure is perfect, and it has rendered beautiful colors in this nice light. Sharp detail! Great work!
Scott

Nice one Paul glad to see made some good captures down south, classic warm climate pose for a dragon fly ours try and hug rocks etc to keep warm the try and get as far from a surface as possible to keep cool, and quiet often the end of the tail is pointed towards the sun like here to reduce the surface area exposed to the direct heating of the sun. Hi Paul, looks like you had a good time in South Africa.
Sorry I can't help with the I.D. But it is a fine capture, well exposed great perspective and that blue sky really makes it stand out.

Regards
Terry.

Hi Paul. I've never seen a dragonfly pose in quite this style before and I like it. Your exposure is great, the dragonfly is sharp and I very much like your POV and DOF. I can't help with the ID I'm afraid, my books only cover Europe. Lovely capture :)
