This is a Libelluid from South Africa. I've tried very hard indeed to ID this one using a key, but whilst fairly certain still cannot be 100% sure of the species.

This male dragonfly belongs to the subfamily Tritheminae and the genus Trithemis and I'm pretty certain is a red veined dropwing Trithenis arteriosa. Trithemis is included in the Libellulidae family which is one of the largest and widely represented dragonfly familes in the world. There are 954 listed species in this family and 58 of those occur in South Africa.

Libellulids are diverse in size, shape, colour and habits. Most are medium sized and sexually dimorphic with the male being the most colourful of the two. Most species in this family perch horizontally rather than hanging vertically when settling.

I hope you like the picture.

The notes and the key I used are from A fieldguide to the Dragonflies of South Africa Warwick & Michele Tarboton (Privately published).

I shot this using Gerhard's 150 mm Sigma Macro lens. Thanks Gerhard.

Hi Paul,
Incredible. A fantastic shot, I love the rich colours. Amazing detail and normally a shallow DOF doesn't work so well for these shots (my opinion) but this is great, taking the wings out of focus really accentuates the body. Superb image!

Hi Paul!

Full of charm and grace. Red body is very well composed with desert BG. Details are very nice. Most of all I like POV and insect's pose. I'm not sure about DOF, but at least head and body is well visible. Great reminiscence of your trip to hot Africa :-)

Hi Paul,
a amazing picture with lovely colours and very good POV.
The shallow DOF really help the dragonfly standout nicely from the BG. The sharpness and exposure are spot on.
Excellent work.

Amazingly great DOF and POV, i like the color red in your photo. TFS

Hello Paul!
This is a very impressive capture with an unusual perspective. While the wings could be aflutter, the rigid parts of the body stand out in sharp outline, especially the spiky bristles on legs, head and neck.
Great stuff!

Hello Paul,
This is an outstanding shot!
No technicall nits. Love the details and colours here. The DOF could've been better. The blurred wings emphasize the body well.
I like it a lot!

Very good shot!
Very nice POV!
Very good DOF!
Very good colours!

Hi Paul,
I really like the frame filling tight crop of this shot. No distractions here, it is all dragonfly. Excellent colors, and sharp detail. DOF is shallow, but it is sharp where it counts. Even down to the detail in the shadow of the wings.

Hello Paul...
A very interesting pose!
As usual a very well composed image, with DOF spot on the body giving excellent details... Great colours, maybe dark part upper left attracts some attention..?
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Paul!
Magnificent close up.Colors, details, motion blur on wings,DOF
you managed,POV and framing are excellent.TFS...:-)

Nice one, Paul, tack sharp, lovely colours and a position we rarely see here, as it's usually not hot enough ;-) Small nit about the shallow DOF, but if you came straight from shooting one hanging in the air, you're forgiven ;-)

Excellent POV showing a fantastic pose of this really cool dragonfly. :)

Hi Paul, excellent macro. Beautiful vibrant red colours with an excellent pose and detail. TFS.
Dean.

Hi Paul. Exceptional work as always, this is a beauty. I love the sharpness and detail, the light is fantastic and that striking red against the soft, diffuse complementary BG is a winner. I don't always want all the wings in focus and in this case your DOF is just great as far as I'm concerned. Very nicely done :)

Superb capture, lovely colour and a very show off insects...nice comp.
Well done sir...

Hi Paul,

Great image, good colors and nice and sharp details. I am no macro-expert, but don't you think a higher f-value would have increased the quality of the picture because of a wider DOF? Anyway, good picture!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi Paul! The extremely shallow depth of field works very nicely here. It effectively draws the eye in to the right features. I love the bokeh effect, too!

wow,
great great macro with good colours!
Great details, composition and note!
Thanks Ana:)

Hello Paul!
Excellent macro.Colors, simple BG,POV,DOF and composition are
wonderful.Thanks for sharing.

Hi Paul,
funny pose, excellently taken and composed.
Great work with very well chosen DOF,
leaving the wings looking like a soft and transparent veil,
making the picture a piece of art as well as an outstanding document of nature.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter
