Ghost crabs, also called sand crabs, are crabs of the genus Ocypode, common shore crabs in many countries. These crabs are called ghosts because of their ability to disappear from sight almost instantly, scuttling at speeds up to 10 miles per hour, while making sharp directional changes. These creatures have two black eyes, with sharp 360° vision which they use to see flying insects and catch them in mid air. The ghost crab, however, cannot see directly up, so it must burrow into the ground to prevent birds from catching it.
The ghost crab tunnels down four feet into the ground at a 45° angle, creating 1-2 inch wide holes, which speckle the beach. At dusk, these crabs will sprint to the ocean in order to obtain oxygen from the water which washes over their gills, and in June, females will release their eggs into the ocean. Ghost crabs hibernate during the winter, holding their breath for six weeks, by storing oxygen in sacs near the gills.
Characteristics of the genus include one claw being larger than the other, but not as profoundly as for the male fiddler crab.
Species:
Ocypode ceratophthalmus
Ocypode cordimana
Ocypode cursor
Ocypode pallidula
Ocypode quadrata
Ocypode ryderi
-----------------
One of these beach crabs from some mm. to some cm., found in a lot of places in the world. Usually running immidiately into hole to hide. This one stopped for a moment. If I have to guess exact species, then it's: Ocypode quadrata.

Hi Aivar.
What a beauty. In spite of the fact that I live at the sea, I never saw such crabs. Amazing specimen, perfect detailed and sharpened. You have selected POV nicely. DOF is very good too. Nice natural colours and lighting. Perfect done and TFS.

Lol it does seem to be saying "this is mine" and I for one wouldn't want to try and seperate it from it's prize. The colours on this crab are just lovely. Sharp details and good POV

Hi Aivar

What a charming capture!
I raelly like the pose here, too, as well as the nice title to go with it! ;)
The full-frontal POV works great, the exposure - although quite difficult because of the strong light and the bright colors - is managed exceptionally and the composition is very nice.
I also like the charming colors and the sharp details, as well.
Very well done!

Cheers, TFS and Happy 2007!
Horia

Great shot, its hard to get the exposure right on these beaches in bright sun, you've done well.
Good composition, sharpness and DOF

An interesting image Aivar with appropriate sharpness and point of view.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, , background, framing, notes.

I like it: lighting.

I don't like it: nothing to quarrel.

An fitting title to summarize the amusing scene... thank you for sharing.
My best greetings... Ricardo

Hello Aivar,
amazing portait of a crab, perfect low eye level frontal approach. Fascinating to be able to watch that crab eating.
I might be tempted to reduce brightness and increase contrast a little bit, but I am sure you have reported the very intense tropical light on the shore very well here. Thank you!
Best regards,
Peter

Hello Aivar,
Very nice photo.Well caught, framed and composed.POV,details and lighting are also wonderful.
TFS..:-)

Aivar,

Allow me to comment... I have only seen these guys / gals in HOT places. Last time I saw some was along the beaches in Western Australia. I shall have to dig out the shots I have.

I like the PoV in this shot. It is a bit pale, but given the glare on white beaches and hash light near the equator that is understandable. Perhaps it can be tweeked a wee.

What is the dark object behind the ghostcrab? Tfs, Jay

Hi aivar
