[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For today's posting (a scanned slide taken in 2002) I have moved to Antarctica. It shows Adele penguins clambering up an iceberg - there were leopard seals patrolling the coast.

Paulet Island is a circular island about 1 mile (1.6 km) in diameter, lying 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of Dundee Island, off the northeastern end of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is composed of lava flows capped by a cinder cone with a small summit crater. Geothermal heat keeps parts of the island ice-free, and the presence of such heat suggests that it was last active within the last 1,000 years. Paulet Island was discovered by a British expedition (1839-1843) under James Clark Ross and named by him for Captain the Right Honorable Lord George Paulet, Royal Navy.

Paulet Island is home to a colony of over 200,000 Adelie penguins.

The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost part of the mainland of Antarctica, and almost the only part of that continent that extends outside the Antarctic Circle. It lies in the Western Hemisphere, facing South America, making it a part of West Antarctica. It extends from a line between Cape Adams (Weddell Sea) and a point on the mainland south of Eklund Islands, to Prime Head (63º13'S). The peninsula forms part of the British Antarctic Territory.

The first sighting of Antarctic Peninsula is contested but apparently occurred in the 1820s. Agreement on this name by the US-ACAN and UK-APC in 1964 resolved a long-standing difference over the use of the American name "Palmer Peninsula" or the British name "Graham Land" for this feature.[1] (Graham Land is now that part of the Antarctic Peninsula northward of a line between Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz, whilst Palmer Land is the part southward of that line. Palmer Land is named for the American seal hunter, Nathaniel Palmer.) In Chile, the peninsula is officially referred as O'Higgins Land, after the Chilean patriot and Antarctic visionary. Other Spanish countries call it "Península Antártica", among them Argentina (while also calling it "Tierra de San Martín"), which has more bases and personnel there than any other nation.

The peninsula is highly mountainous, its highest peaks rising to approximately 2,800 metres (9,186 feet). These mountains are considered to be a continuation of the Andes of South America, with a submarine spine connecting the two. That is an argument advanced by Chile and Argentina for their territorial claims. The peninsula has a sharp elevation gradient, with glaciers flowing into the Larsen Ice Shelf, which experienced significant breakup in 2002.

Since the peninsula has the mildest climate in Antarctica, the highest concentration of research stations on the continent can be found there, or on the many nearby islands, and is the part of Antarctica most often visited by tour vessels and yachts.

Hi James,

It's wonderful to see your penguins again! I'm so glad you show one still climbing after the others reached the top. I love the different positions. Excellent colors and good details. It must be amazing so see this.

Hello James, another superb shot. I really like it, it is funny, sharp and bright, beautiful colours and great composition... I like the penguin at the bottom, with its little foot in the air to help him climb the iceberg. What nice trips you have had in your life, it is fantastic. You make us travel through the month of March, which for us in northern latitudes mean winter, winter to be going. It's the time of the year where I say: I'm not going out anymore, I wait for spring. Thanks for the great reminder of joy in sliding on the snow and in the sunshine, like it is here today. Bye bye!

Francine

Great action shot! Details and sharpness excellent for a scanned photo. You could almost say that guys are having fun.

Hi James, Fun shot of the Penguins. Fine composition and super details of the ice. Beautiful blue sky. Tfs Richard

What a cute and funny shot you have here of these penguins. They are so cute

Hello James,
Fun capture of the moment!
But maybe it is not as hard as it looks like, I guess they are used to manage under these conditions...
A very attractive composition, sharp fine details and the ice is well exposed!
Greetings,
Pablo -

:-) OK-

Hello James
This is a spectacular picture and you have done well to freeze (a poor pun) the action as the last penguin is scrambling up the iceberg.
perfectly exposed as well with none of the whites blown at all...and you took this when you didnt have the luxury of a preview to show you a histogram and blinky parts showing the exposure!!
Another Superb note as well full of fascinating information.

All the Best

Paul

Great to talk you today and looking forward to tomorrow.

Its nice to see Panguans on Trek Nature! Well done James! This one is very nice. Cheers Josh Lewis.

Hello James,
I never tire of your globe hopping it keeps things fresh. This splendid image reminds me how incredible I find their ability to climb on the ice. Here apparently for good reason, they don't want to be lunch. Thanks James.

Hi James!

I just wrote a critique for your next post, that big rock. I have to tell the same here - how does the penguin not fall off? :) Again a very sharp and contrastful scan, the bluish tone in the ice is very interesting while the penguins' white are not - it can't be an incorrect wb, but what can make the ice bluish then...
They look really lovely, TFS!

Best regards,
Andor
