Photo was taken on early afternoon in Admiralty Bay. On the foreground you can see floating growlers.

Growler is a piece of ice that floats on the water. The name comes from the sound they make as they scrape along sheets of ice as the water rises and falls.

Growler size: Height: less than 1 metre (3 feet) Length: less than 5 metres (16 feet)

Why does ice float on water ?

Water reaches its maximum density at 4°C (40°F). As it cools further and freezes into ice, it actually becomes less dense.

Ice floats because it is about 9% less dense than liquid water. In other words, ice takes up about 9% more space than water, so a liter of ice weighs less than a liter water. The heavier water displaces the lighter ice, so ice floats to the top. One consequence of this is that lakes and rivers freeze from top to bottom, allowing fish to survive even when the surface of a lake has frozen over. If ice sank, the water would be displaced to the top and exposed to the colder temperature, forcing rivers and lakes to fill with ice and freeze solid.

Hello Krzysztof,
Superb view from the Antarctic showing iceflows and the one of the S. Shetlands on the horizon. This is full of atmosphere and even if one didn't read that this was taken in the Antarctic one could easily guess it.
Thanks for sharing this fine image and I'm sorry to have posted a message to Ralf to you by mistake.
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Krzysztof, beautiful ice composition with fantastic landscape, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hej!

Splendido paesaggio marino antartico, eccellenti POV e DOF, fantastica composizione ricca di elementi, ottima nitidezza, magnifici i colori e la luce. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hallo Krzysztof
What a lovely and peaceful atmosphere you have captured in this landscape filled with ice and snow. As far as you look the beauty follows you. The snow on the mountain tops, the water filled with heaps of solid ice, and the rainbow in all of its spectacular colours in the far distance makes this scenery more special. Although this is a very cold looking scene, I think that this the kind of place where wants to go to unwind from the daily bickering. I am very cold blooded but if it was as all possible to see a beautiful piece of nature like this in real, I'll pack 3 sets of woollies and be on my way. Thanks for sharing. It was lovely to look at.
Kind regards
Anna

Hello Krzys,
Beautiful view of this cold seascape together with an interesting note. I've never heard of 'growlers' before but I'm familiar with the sound! Excellent illustration of them here in the foreground and I like the depth of focus in this capture. Beautiful colours too.
Many thanks, Ulla

Very sharp from the growlers to the mountains in the distance.
I love the composition too.
Lovely light and brilliant blue, icy tones :-)
The note is superb!
That rainbow is the icing on the cake!
Well done!!!

Hi Krzysztof

Long time no "talk", my friend...i hope you are ok :)

A splendid icy landscape from you again and one with a terrific composition.
I like the two blue-ish pieces from the FG - they really attract attention to this segment of the frame, the impressive "mountains" from the BG and of course that great rainbow from the corner. They all add-up and create this superb image.
Very nicely taken and presented!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Krzysztof.
One again you reflect the state and features of the place greatly. I feel coldness of the air and water, heaviness of the ice and greatness of the ocean. I like framing a lot, great DOF and amazing details of the scene, fine "heavy" colour palette. Bravo. Well done.

Hi Krzysztof,
I admire your Antarctic land&seascape photos. I was planning to visit Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula this year but because of the lack of time I ended up with Peruvian Amazon in late may. Hopefully next year...
It's another well composed and exposed capture with a lovely view. Exposure is very well controlled.

Hi Krzysztof,
Another wonderful shot from you from the frozen Continent Antarctica. The floating ice and the distant mountains give a fine perspective. I can see a rainbow too. Simply a majestic setting and you have portrayed it so beautifully from your chosen POV. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Wow Krzysztof - what an amazing place this must have been to visit.
Such an interesting view and I also enjoyed reading your notes.
So a growler is like a small iceberg then? I can see a rainbow too.
Thank you for sharing
