| This very big plant, heracleum sphondylium, in Swedish called björnfloka,(which is not the same as hemlock, called odört in Swedish) is an endangered species in Sweden, because stupid politicians have proclaimed that it should be removed from Swedish soil. Anyway, it is common all over Asia, I took this photo in Armenia, and therefore I find it hard to accept that Swedish politicians mean the plant does not belong to our flora! Because the flora is almost the same, all the way to the Caspian sea. In Denmark you can see this big and beautiful plant on many places, obviously the Danish politicians are a bit more tolerant, at least concerning this flower. It grows and it grows and it grows, wherever it likes to grow and whatever the politicians say.... |

nice to see something from the beautiful country of Armenia, TFS Ori
Hi Monica
We have this plant in the UK as well (known as Giant Hogweed or Hemlock). This year I saw many growing on a roadside - and the local authorities had sprayed them with weedkiller. This had killed not just the Heracleum, but all the other vegetation! I know Heracleum is poisonous and can cause a nasty rash to the skin (the sap destroys skin pigment so you get severe sunburn), but that is no reason to destroy the environment. For all our intelligence, we are a very stupid species!
A good picture of this impressive plant, really shows the scale of the leaves and massive flowerheads. TFS.

Hello Monica, good to see you again.
Good shot of this weed!! Hemlock is not a good plant - very poisonous - it is used in many murders!!
It does look very impressive

Hi Monica,
an impressive, well made documentation of the Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) growing in its native place. That plant is regarded to be an invasive weed in Austria, too, and there are many attempts to remove the plant because of its dangerous toxicity of severely burning a sun exposed skin. Most attempts to remove the plant have been in vain with the vital plant reappearing every spring. We really like those very picturesque giant remainings in autumn that grow up to 5 meters.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
Hi Monica,
I hope politicians become extinct as "species" and this plant grows in Sweden.
