Cirrochroa emalea (Guérin-Méneville, 1843), The Malay Yeoman

This Oriental species was initially described in 1843 by Guérin-Méneville and allocated to the Genus Argynnis, establishing its relationship with the larger Fritillaries of the Holarctic region. Its current Genus Cirrochroa is still listed by the British Museum as part of the Nymphalid group Argynninae. I am aware of five sub-species from different parts of the Oriental Region, as follows:

C. e. emalea. From S.Thailand, Lankawi, Peninsular Malaya
C. e. martini Fruhstorfer, 1906. From Sumatra
C. e. bajadeta Moore, [1858] From Java
C. e. ravana Moore, [1858]. From Borneo
C. e. lapaona Kheil, 1884. From Nias

So far, the only posting of this species on TN is a view of the upperside that I posted some while ago. So here is a shot showing the underside. This is also from an old 35mm slide taken in Brunei ages ago, but now scanned and cleaned up as best I can so as to form part of the record here. The image has been cropped slightly, resized and sharpened for TN. I have also used the Spot Healing brush and the Blur Tool to remove artifacts from the scanning process.

Hello Alan,
thank you for posting this rare picture of a life C. emalea.
Considering the slide-scan, you achieved pretty good resolution here so that
the nice wing pattern is presented in detail. Colours appear very natural.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Alan,

You have used so well the light showing excelent colors on both insect and background. Even if the POV you have chosen is not an usual one wings pattern and structure can be well observed.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian
