Grey Sailor Neptis leucoporos Fruhstorfer,1908
This Neptis species is a close relative of the Common Sailor Neptis hylas. It is often observed gliding in the usual 'sailing' fashion that gave the origin to the commion names of many species in the genus. The wings are black and white above, whilst the undersides are grey. This distinguishes it from the Common Sailor, which has a rich golden brown underside.
The species has been bred in Singapore on Gironerra spp. which is also the host plant of another Nymphalinae, Eulaceura osteria.
There are two sub-species of Leucoporos named. N. l. leucoporos is from Northern Indo-China. N. l. cresina is distributed from S. Myanmar, Thailand, C.Vietnam, Malay Pen., Langkawi, Borneo and Pulo Laut.
A picture of the larva can be found at a Singapore website I have just discovered butterflypals.
This picture was taken in Brunei, North Borneo, some years ago. It has been scanned, resized and sharpened for TN. As far as I can see, this species has not been posted to TN before. |
