Cirrochroa emalea The Malay Yeoman

Cirrochroa is an Oriental Nymphalid Genus currently attributed by most authors to the Sub-Family Heliconiinae.

Cirrochroa emalea (Guérin-Méneville, 1843) is found widely in the Oriental Region. The nominate sub-species occurs in S. Thailand, Lankawi and Peninsular Malaya. In Sumatra, the race is called C. e. martini Fruhstorfer. In Java and Nias, respectively, there are C. e. bajadeta and C. e. lapoana.

This picture was taken in Brunei, the Bornean sub-species being C. e. ravana Moore. I haven't been able to find this species before on TN.

In Cirrochroa the antennal club is not well defined; the venation is similar to Vindula. Males appear to lack androconia, but in some the veins on both wings are edged with paler scales. Migratory flights of C. emalea have been observed in Borneo and, on a smaller scale, in Malaya.

The larva of one species has rather short branched spines, and has been found feeding on Hydnocarpus.

Rather sadly, dried, dead specimens can be purchased from a number of web-based dealers for as little as $3.00.

This image has been scanned, resized and sharpened for TN.

Hi Alan

Another stunner from Borneo. Even though its old, I don't think we have too many shots Brunei. The scanning process has worked fine I think, sharpness and contrast are good and its well composed.

Ciao Alan.
Una bella specie che non conoscevo, quella che ci mostri oggi.
Un risultato davvero eccellente, se consideriamo che questa immagine è stata scattata nel 1984!
Grazie per le interessanti note.

Hi Alan. Attractive and much more endearing alive than dried. I love those ember colours alongside the black and the hint of white.very elegant. For the life of me, I don't understand this preoccupation with cenre or off-centre compositions. Why look sideways at something as splendid as this? Regards. Klaudio.
