This damselfly was only about 4cm or 5cm long and sitting on a leaf only about 10cm off the ground. To get this shot I had to flatten my tripod out completely and I had to lay flat on the ground just to see through the view finder. I think I was luck with this damselfly as it only moved places twice and either time it landed only a short distance away from its original location. I have noticed with damselflys and dragonflys that often if they are not disturbed to much they will return to the exact same place again and again. This makes setting up to photograph them a bit easier once you can recognise there flight patterns and rest areas. This little one was still in the same place almost an hour after I had been photographing other things nearby.

Hi Matthew,
Awesome macro of this damselfly.Immaculate sharpness and very neat and clear details. Lovely colours, fine focus and perfect use of flash. Excellent head-on POV to portray it. I like its gorgeous eyes and the catch light on them as also its hairy mouth. Very nicely composed and presented. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Matthew,
This is a super macro of this damselfly.
I would suggest you treat yourself to an 'angle-finder' to save you getting down flat on the ground.
Regards,
Peter

Matthew, I agree with you; dragonflies and damselflies are generally very cooperative during photo shoots :-).
I had experienced a similar situation a few months back when a damselfly chanced to visit us. Fortunately, it had taken position on our fig tree at the eye level, so I had no need to lie flat on the ground. I shot it until my memory stick was full and the little thing was still there!
This is a wonderful macro of the eyes and face of a beautifully coloured damsel. Using tripod gives you the best of details and the colours too are delightful in this picture. Only the fill flash has the tendency to bounce off the eyes.
Great point of view and remarkable DOF.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Matthew.
I see you have used a great set of equipment for macro shooting. The image of this insect is really great. Sharpness and details, lighting and colours are perfect as well as the composition of the picture. With this equipment DOF cannot be large but for insect "portrait" pictures this is a great choice. Bravo and kind regards.
Alexei.

Hi Matt

This is an outstanding shot!!!
You did great to go to all thattrouble to take this photo; it was definitely worth it.
The details you managed to get here are most impressive and the sharpness and clarity of every texture is amazing.
The POV is also excellent and the DOF is great, too!
Wonderful work all in all.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Matthew, fantastic details on head with a close composition to enhance look of the macro. I would love to buy such a macro lens and get into this stuff, a change from landscapes.. Regards Steve.

Hi Matthew,
Very stunning macro work with great details in both the damselfly as well as the leaf. Superb work on the DOF and exposure. The colors really seem to pop. The flash did illuminate the colors even more.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Matthew!
Yes, this is really close close-up ;> Very good details and fantastic DOF. POV is also excellent.
This is probably a male specimen (usually males are blue in damselflies) but the name of species is unknown for me :(
TFS and have a nice evening!
