I took him yesterday from a "fair" which full of wild birds; Finches, tits, warblers, larks, magpies, starlings and other passerine; even raptors, various hawks and falcon; sometime you can see heron and kingfishers; There is always someone hunt wild birds for caged pets; this is unlawful, but sadly, few times the birdcatcher be punished; and most of time, the trapped birds can't get really help.
The poor Great spotted woodpecker was so weak; In a park I try to encourage him to fly away, but he can do is only hanged on the bark, then felon the grass.I felt deep sorry to saw the end of him, It seems hard to find way, Which stop the wild birds from be catched and killed...... |

HI Wi,
a touching moment and nice pic,i really respect ur feeling and attempts to free the bird, sometimes the best of efforts are futile but one should be steadyfast and carry the good work.

CoolNik
You have captured a beautiful bird here! That is the only sort of capture we should condone!
Full marks for your sensitvity towards the bird. Education and participation in hobbies like ours would seem to be a sensible way forward!
Kind regards,
Bev :-)
This is a very young one.
He has probably not learned to fly yet. Probably he will be able to fly well within two days. Despite beeing out of the nest, he is still dependant of the parents who will go on taking care of him and bringing food.
Normally at this age they shoud have enough fat to be able to starve a couple of days. So if parents are dead, the chick is still making some chance. But he's got to be a quick learner to be able to feed himself as quick as possible.
