---------------------

These large epiphytic ferns are common in rain forests of the old world.

A "nest" of leathery leaves forms on top of the stout rhizome beneath which is a large spony mass of roots and root hairs.

Falling leaves of trees and other debris are caught in the "nest" and rot to form humus while large quantities of rain water are absorbed by the sponge of roots. In this way the fern receives its nourishment.
