[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I had just taken several photos of this Heron walking along a pipe in the water, when it suddenly decided to fly off.

I had to quickly retract the zoom lens and just point the camera in the direction of the bird. Not being a nature photographer, I was just happy that something came out.

I had thought of posting a larger version - to show the 'S' shaped neck in flight more clearly - but I decided to include the 'rippled' reflection in the water.

Tech: Resized and sharpened. Brightness -6.

Good result from a quick reaction. Nice composition and well done for catching it.

Andrew
Not a bad catch, considering how it happened. You later learn to anticipate their movements, and then you are waiting for them o fly off. But be prepared for many misses!

You did well under the circumstances, Andrew. I like the positioning of the bird in the frame, the motion blur, and - as you mentioned - the "rippled" reflection off the water surface. Good shot.

As you were not prepared for the take off I think you did a nice job. I fully agree with Callie - you will have to know by their movements when they will take off and the just sit and wait and watch. Also you will come home with a lot of pictures with only sky and clouds ;-). I would say that it takes about 50 shots to get one good.
