Red-whiskered Bulbuls (Pycnonotus jocosus) are characterised by its upright black crest which look like a hat, or a spike of hair on top of its head. They also have red cheeks and vents. They have an average length of 20 cm.

Red-whiskered Bulbuls are widespread in Hong Kong, and are found in a number of habitats. They feed on berries and insects. They are often found in groups, often calling loudly together from a treetop: "bul-bit" "bul-bit". The birds are often rather tame, and can be watched at close range.

Tech: Cropped, resized for TE and sharpened. Brightness -3. Contrast +6. Increased saturation. Added black border.

Very nice capture of this beauty in wild, you did a very good job with your camera, the pof is good, with the composition you must have some luck with it, but even, I like it, very good job

Not a bad shot of the bulbul in the wild. Unfortunately the tangle of leaves in the background distracts from the bird.

Hi Andrew
Good of you to drop in to TN again, and even post some. This is a delightful bulbul, a new one for me, and a beautiful bird to boot. Ours run into drab grey to yellow green, not such lovely colours as this guy is flaunting. The vent on some of our species are bright yellow. TFS

Nice to see you back on TN, Andrew. We don't have bulbuls here. This one is beautiful, well placed in light patches, in the most adequate position to appreciate a bird. Bamboos are doing very well to put the bird in situation. Hope to see more of your shots here, but I realize Hong-Kong is not precisely the right place for wildlife (at least as we understand it :-); Regards, JM

Nice shot Andrew, a very interesting looking bird - not one that I am familiar with. Nice details and good composition and exposure in what looks like difficult conditions. Well done.

A great capture, Andrew. The color of the bird is good contrast to the green leaves. The focus is perfect and I love the dappled sunlight.
