Hello dear friends,

I am back after a break of a week due to business trips.

This shot of gray pansy butterfly was taken while sipping nectar from the lantana flowers. Lantana ttracts butterflies and the other insects like a magnet.

Lantana is a genus of about 150 species of perennial flowering plants, native to tropical regions of the Americas, Africa and existing as an imported weed in numerous regions including Australia, New Guinea and Hawaii. The genus includes both herbaceous plants and shrubs growing to 0.5-2 m tall.

Lantana's aromatic flower clusters (called umbels) are a mix of red and orange florets. Other colors exist as new varieties are being selected.

Lantana berries are edible when ripe though like most fruit may be mildly poisonous if eaten while still green. Lantana flowers and berries are attractive to insects and birds. As with almost all plants the leaves are toxic if eaten.

Some species are invasive, and are considered to be noxious weeds in southern Asia, southern Africa, and Australia. In the United States, some Lantana species are now naturalized in the southeast, especially coastal regions of the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and the Gulf Coast where it is often known as "ham and eggs".

Lantana species are used as food plants by the larvae of hepialid moths of the genera Aenetus, including A. ligniveren and A. scotti, and Endoclita, including E. malabaricus. Other Lepidoptera whose larvae feed on Lantana include Hypercompe orsa and Setaceous Hebrew Character.

Hi Pankaj,
Welcome back.Even I am posting a picture in TN after a long time. So we have somethng in common today.:)
The picture of the Grey Pansy on Lantana flowers against the dark background is fantastic. Beautiful colours and contrast. You have used the flash very nicely to light the flower and the butterfly. Very good cmposition and framing.
What you said about Lantana acting as a magnet to butterflies is very true. I have also noticed it. So does flowers of Cosmos. They also attract a lot of butterflies like, Common Crow, Blue Tiger, Chocolate Pansy,Common Emigrant,Tailed Jay,Commander, Common Grass yellow, Danaid Egg Fly, to name a few. I have planted both these plants in my garden and the result is excellent.:)
Regards,
Smitha.

Hi Pankaj, lovely butterfly with wonderful colors and splendid sharpness, great inusual POV, very well done, ciao Silvio

YES! Perfectly sharp and again that amazing lighting. Those lantana are definitely a necessary part of any butterfly garden.

Yep - the title is true - you see Lantana - you will see Butterflies... Well done shot - with the emphasis on the Lantana - maybe too much, for the butterfly feels a bit neglected what the light is concerned. Good one nevertheless. ! Cheers, Klaus
