Nice fly shot. Although, personally, I would have liked the head area to be more detailed. There are hairs on the face in vertical rows next to each eye that you should be able to see clearly as well as mouth parts. The leaf hairs should be more clearly defined as well. Also the background, legs and abdomen look more "out of focus blurry" rather than a smooth blending which should happen with tight macro shots. The pic is a little to "grainy" too. Possibly a tripod or monopod might get you there. You also might try increasing the shutter speed to help with camera shake. For insect macro shots like this I've found that the Canon EF 100mm F2.8 Macro USM and the Canon MP-E 65mm f2.8 1-5x Macro Photo lenses, or equal, to get the required detail for this type of shots.
However, overall this is a good pic but with insect macro shots, fine detail is everything.

I know there isn't but I could swear I see a cornea..which isn't possible...but it gives a cloudy appearance of one in the left eye...and makes it look as though he is staring right at you/us. On the edge of a leaf..very nice!

You did it pretty well to have this macro with the 70/300, and specially handheld.
Textures on the leaf and insect's head are pretty good.
I like a lot the colours and composition made here, the image has a lot of visual impact.

Nice macro-shot of this fly. With the warmer weather, flies become more and more difficult to take the picture of. They are more agitated. Nice composition and colours.

The green leaf cuts through the frame on a lovely diagonal arc.
The fly's red eyes contrast the colour nicely and are well detailed.
Well balanced ,the dark and light play off each other nicely.
