I present today a beautiful dragonfly sitting on a garden water pipe which lay at a muddy corner of our garden. It sat there for a long time probably eyeing the moist ground for liquid intake. Hope everyone like this top POV detailing its body features and its wings patterns. Unfortunately as I am unable to identify it, I request all our learned members to help me in this. It would then help me in writing a correct description and giving a proper title. For the time being I put in this general information regarding dragonflies.

This indeed is a Ditch Jewel, Brachythemis contaminata. Many many thanks to good friend Joe Kellard for helping me in identifying it. But as I could not find much details about this particular species in wikipedia I am not able to update the description. Still searching..........

---------------
A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, and an elongated body.

Dragonflies typically eat mosquitoes, midges, and other small insects like flies, bees, and butterflies. They are therefore valued as predators, since they help control populations of harmful insects. Dragonflies are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic. Dragonflies do not normally bite or sting humans, though they will bite in order to escape, if grasped by the abdomen.

Hi Sumon,
i do indeed like the POV from the top here, it clearly shows us the intricate structure of the wings and the beautiful markings of the body. DOF, details and exposure are superb as always from you, although if i'm being honest i do find the white pipe a tiny bit distracting..but thats probably just me! Still a very well executed shot my friend, thank you for sharing it.
Paul

Sumon,

Hi Sumon,
an unusual POV but it's nice and shows the details of the wings. Well exposed, all details and the amazing colour are well seen.
Fine sharpness and DOF, the whole insect is in focus.
Well done.

Hi Sumon.
Funny orientation of the image despite I think its natural position. Terrific reproduction of all features and details of the beauty. Especially I like contrast between dragonfly coloration and BG. Great sharpness and colour exactness, suitable blurred neutral BG. TFS and best regards. Well done.
Alexei.

Hello Sumon,
nice shot of this Dragonfly.
I love the "bird's-eye" POV as it shows the detail in the wings and is perfect for an identification: This is a female Ditch Jewel - Brachythemis contaminata.
Order: Odonata Fabricius - Dragonflies and Damselflies
Suborder: Anisoptera Selys - Dragonflies
Superfamily: Libelluloidea
Family: Corduliidae - Green-eyed Skimmers
Genus: Brachythemis
Scientific name: Brachythemis contaminata

See here.

Superb sharpness and clarity.
Nice vibrent colours.
Well done my friend,

Joe

You are the master of the Dragonfly as well as the colour matching. It seems you see in such beautiful patterns and colours which many, including myself, often miss. I wonder at times if this is a cultural phenomenon, as my good and close Punjabi friends also love many colours...Very well done and so good to have you back and psoting again so nicely.
Bob

A very great macro of this dragonfly, with excellent sharpness and details.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Sumon,

This dragonfly is really beautiful with wonderful colors and patterns. Superb details of the head, body and wings. The wings are magnificent with the orange corners. I love the unusual background. Too bad he didn't find something prettier to settle on.

Marvellous colour-combination (gold and grey) and great composition. Fortunately that the water-pipe looks quite natural, like a stick. The dragonfly really looks like a jewel. Thanks and best regards

Hi Sumon, splendid Dragonfly with wonderful colors, fantastic details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Destacaría en primer lugar que es una fotografía muy atractiva por el excelente encuadre. El ángulo de disparo muy acertado más una gama de colores muy interesante que todo ello junto crea un precioso conjunto. Bien presentada en ese formato.

Hello Sumon,
The Ditch Jewel is a new species for me and you caught this male from an unusual POV directly from the top with fine sharpness. Judging by the width of the water pipe this must be quite a large species.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

Hello Sumon,
Excellent photo with splendid colours and sharp details. Fantastic DOF.

Hi Sumon, either that's a small pipe or that is one very large dragonfly, or maybe a bit of both. You shot this at 19.8 mm. Wow, you must have been right on top of this guy. Your colour and detail are excellent (as always). A small thing maybe, or call it a personal preference, but I'd be tempted to flip this guy 180 degrees so his head was in the upper right quadrant. I've put this into a workshop, to provide you with another option.

Thanks, John

Hello Sumon!
This time the most interesting element of this photo is POV - rather unusual to see dragonfly with head "below abdomen" :) And the spicies is also very nice coloured, especially wings look nice. MOreover you added frame in the colour of BG and that made the entire composition very nice for watching :)
Best greetings from Lodz!
Friendly yours,
Radomir
