[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I present this old Common Lime butterfly sitting on my fore finger. The wings are damaged owing to old age and it seemed it was into its last few days. I found it fluttering its wings erratically and losing control in flight. And as it bumped into a plant and fell flat I extended my finger to help it get up. It just hopped onto it and probably felt confident and comfort perched up there. It stayed there for a long time and I just moved around with it as it sat motionless. It was great feeling but I knew it had very few hours left. However it felt exciting to note that I played a part to make him happy those few last moments. It jumped out finally and I saw it flying away, but in a very irregular pattern. Unconciously I found myself mutterring 'Good-Bye'.

I have posted quite a few of this Swallowtail and hence I do not go into writing about it. The only notable point is that it is particularly abundant during and after the monsoons and as the butterfly ages, the yellow markings on the wings deepen to orange.

The Common Lime or the Lemon Butterfly (Papilio demoleus) is a common and widespread Swallowtail butterfly. It gets its name from its host plants which are usually citrus species such as the lime. It is also sometimes called the Chequered Swallowtail. Unlike most swallowtail butterflies it does not have a prominent tail.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Papilionidae
Subfamily: Papilioninae
Genus: Papilio
Species: P. demoleus

Bonjour Sumon,

Bravo pour le parfaite exposition et les détails.
Merci.
Joseph

Hi Sumon,
I love the sharpness and natural color of this picture. Must be a great experience to have a butterfly resting on one of your finger. Also wonderful that you were able to take a picture of this beauty with the other hand. Very well done and tfs.
JC

Hello Mana,
It always gives you a good feeling when these lovely and delicate creatures put their trust in you. :) It must have really felt happy when you offered your help at hat time. Or that poor weak thing might have become food for some predators.
Lovely shot of the butterfly. Good sharpness ad details. The colour in the background gives it a good contrast. Thanks for sharing this picture,
Regards,
Smitha.

Hello Sumon,
Technically this is an excellent capture of a lime Swallowtail shown from a fine POV with good sharpness against a neutral BG.
One can discuss the pro's and cons of photographing creatures on or in the hand but it is also an illustration that with the right calm approach many species of butterfly can be encouraged to climb on to the finger and be shown for others to admire.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Ivan

You are a wizard, Sumon, and a soul healer too!
How did you manage such a brilliant shot holding the camera with your right hand only?
To top it, the POV is just fabulous.
As for clarity, focus and colours, this is the last word.
Now that we are assimilated into nature through our passion for nature photography, our empathies too with nature and what it stands for have turned stronger. It shows in your compassion for the poor old Lime butterfly.
May God rest its soul in peace!
Thanks for the touching post.

Hi Sumon,
you managed to make an extremly sharp shot of this beautiful butterfly.
Details and textures are perfect.
The composition with the finger the butterfly sits on is great, too.

Is this some kind of Sub Asian magical trick? How in the world did you get it to be on your finger and still manage to take a picture. This just goes to show how gentle you are an nothing seems to be afraid...amazing! Great show in peace and nature Sumon!
Bob

Hello Sumon. I can never get close to butterfly in the wild and make me wonder how the intimacy with some people is so clear. Stunning image in flawless sharpness and clarity. Please allow me to add this to my favorite. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hello Mana,

Thank you for sharing this information with us.
I did not know that the markings became darker!
This really is a beautiful and very detailed photograph! Every part of the body can be clearly studied and what a treat to see its proboscis so carefully coiled!

Kind regards,

Bela foto, a borboleta realmente esta bem debilitada, as cores ficaram bem definidas e o contraste tambem.
A nitidez esta muito boa e a luminosidade deixou a foto mais bonita ainda.

Hello Sumon,
nice finding a a resting place when you need it most. In this case it was your finger, whatever his destiny, you captured it for eternity.
Lovely shot, the details are perfectly sharp and the colors are wonderful.

Thanks Sumon for the nice note... sometimes i feel guilty of killing/capturing these beautiful butterflies in my childhood without the knowledge of their importance in the circle of life. I dont know how many of us have run behind these butterflies to catch them, feel their smooth velvety wings and wondered whether they had a recent makeup with lot of talc on their wings....Thanks to sites like TN we can at least teach our next gen how to care for them and how not to destroy such a delicate thing as nature.

Thanks again for the note...

Hi Sumon Da,
Nice and expert finger along with a retired from life butterfly. Excellent sharp details and a beautiful composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Sumon,
Maybe old age, but still a beauty!
The wings are marked by the tooth of time, but it still gives a fine pose that is captured from an effective point of view...
Well done on macro work, sharp fine details and well isolated from the background!

Hi Sumon.
Touching note and terrific shot Both charming butterfly and finger are reproduced brilliantly. However my comments are about butterfly and picture at whole. Its pose and composition of the picture are wonderful as well as the ultimate sharpness and exactness of butterfly details. BG is so fine and the main subject. Bravo.
Alexei.

Hello Sumon
excellent macro shot with a perfect focus and splendid colours,
wonderfull post,

Hello Sumon !
What a great and original shot ! I love how the butterfly is sitting on your finger, splendid pose, and I also like how he rolled up his tongue, looks cute ! :-) Excellent sharpness and details, wonderful colors, beautiful composition and POV, and a splendid BG, nicely blurred and with great color. Only a bit sad that the butterfly will die some days aftet he picture was taken, but well, this is the way of nature. Anyway, very well done !
Valerie.

Hi Sumon

This is a very beautiful and delicate picture, my friend!
This shot not only shows the wonderful features of this butterfly species, but also his behavior in some situations...very well taken and presented.
The details of your macro are superb and very sharp, the side POV is excellent and the DOF you used is spot-on.
Very good vertical composition chosen here, all put inside a very nice frame.

Bravo and TFS
