Today I present these mating Blister Beetles as a mark for my 250th post. Interestingly the colours of the male and female are different here and going by their sizes I may presume that the bigger one is the male. Though they were 'fixed' in a tall stem I managed to get closer by climbing a wall and drawing the dry stem nearer. Shot taken hand-held in the setting sunlight. Hope everyone like it.

-------------------------------
Beetles (Coleoptera) in the family Meloidae are commonly known as blister beetles. There are approximately 2,500 known species worldwide. Many are conspicuous and some aposematically colored, announcing their toxicity to would-be predators.

They are known as "blister beetles" because they secrete cantharidin, a poisonous chemical causing blistering of the skin and painful swelling. Cantharidin is used medically to remove warts, and is collected for this purpose from species of the genera Mylabris and Lytta, especially Lytta vesicatoria, better known as "Spanish fly".

Blister beetles are hypermetamorphic, going through several larval stages, the first of which is typically a mobile triungulin. The larvae are insectivorous, mainly attacking bees, though a few feed on grasshopper eggs; while sometimes considered parasitoids, it appears that in general, the meloid larva consumes the immature host along with its provisions, and can often survive on the provisions alone, thus they are not obligatory parasitoids but rather food parasites that are facultatively parasitoid, or simply predatory. The adults sometimes feed on flowers and leaves of plants of such diverse families like Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Solanaceae.

The blister beetle genus Epicauta is highly toxic to horses. A few beetles consumed in a single feeding of alfalfa hay may be lethal. Poisonings have also been reported after use of "Spanish fly"-type folk medicines, and after handling blister beetle individuals.

hello sumon,

congratulations on posting the 250th image here at TN, it has been a delightful experience watching your technically perfect captures. You have presented the macro shots specially the butterflies with almost perfection and have shown our beautiful nature to the world.

regarding the shot its a fine one to be the 200th and has all the qualities of a good capture, nice observations regarding the size and the colors, i loved the oof green bg and the well saturated colors of the insect, well composed shot,

looking forward to another 250 delights from the macro king of Orissa.
tfs & regards
pankaj

We do like it! Very well done especially under the conditions. Sharp and well-lighted with a pleasing compo.
I'd say the female is on the left hand-side. Female insects are often larger than the male, Moreover, in the case of parasitoids like the meloidae, the size varies a lot depending on how much food the larva had at its disposal.

Hi Sumon
Great moment and very nice sharp image of those beetles from genus Mylabris. Perfect homogenous background, great diagonal composition
I like it very much
Best wisehs
Krzysztof

PS Congratulation on your 250 post I am waiting for another 250 and more ;-)

Hello Sumon,

Excellent picture of these mating beetle. Great POV and great sharpness. Excellent light and colours. I like very much the pose of the beetle on the left-hand side with the head against the branch.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Sumon,
This couple seems to have some hard time to get on that stem.
It's kind of funny the pose on the left bug, with the head dawn.
I like the good light, sharpness and fine details got on them.
Excellent work, thanks for share it and congratulations for the first 250 pictures here.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Sumon,
Congratulations on your 250th, which you mark with a superb capture of a pair of mating Blister Beetles in a fine diagonal composition and taken with excellent sharpness from a POV that allows us to see all the features.
As most insect females are larger in order to bear the eggs I assume that the larger of these two is the female.
TFS this excellent image,
Regards,
Ivan

My best buddy Sumon,
Heartiest congratulation on your 250th post with a big big sincere thank you for your excellent works from that past to share so many quality sharings with us! a great milestone for you and see many more coming!
This is another one with my compliment too
take good care and my warmest regards to you and family from a friend in NZ
Tony

A combination of the two...although they are well coloured for some reason to me they are not as "fantastic" in colour...I wonder at times if and why the Creator made certain things in a special way. Perhaps it is intent on its level of survival in the nature world? Very good sharp image Sumon!
