Today I present this tiny but gorgeous looking Tortoise Beetle. This was a chance sighting as I was chasing the elusive Blue Pansy butterfly one early morning. As I stopped for a while to catch my breath I saw a red dot moving about on a leaf. It suddenly went underneath the leaf as I approached but my dissapointment at not getting the butterfly made me more focussed in rotating the leaf either way until I got a few shots using the other hand. Shot taken hand-held in the morning sunlight. Hope everyone like it.

------------------------------
The tortoise beetles are an artificial grouping of tribes within the leaf beetle subfamily Hispinae. In past classifications, they have been variously placed as a family ("Cassidae") or a subfamily (Cassidinae); when it was recognized that this group was not monophyletic, it was split and the resulting tribes were incorporated into the Hispinae. Some of the tribes that are considered "tortoise beetles" in the historic sense are the Cassidini, Dorynotini, Hemisphaerotini, Ischyrosonychini, and Mesomphaliini. Their common name arose from the superficial resemblance some species bear to tortoises, the elytra being analogised with the aforementioned reptile's carapace.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Coleoptera
Suborder: Polyphaga
Superfamily: Chrysomeloidea
Family: Chrysomelidae
Subfamily: Hispinae

Hello Sumon!
Nice capture of tortoise beetle, with good DOF and sharpness. I like it.
Anyway, you have some small mistake in the note - just the last word - there is "Hispinae" but it should be "Cassidinae" :>
Greetings,
Radomir

great capture, excellent contrast and colors; very fine details
well done
Livio

Hi Sumon Da,
A nice capture of this beautiful tortoise beetle. It is the similar sp. that I captured and Radomir (cicindela) helped me with the ID. Very well composed with sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Sumon,
Great macro of a species of Tortoise Beetle taken in fine lighting from an excellent POV with nice sharpness on the underside of a leaf.
It is interesting to see that this species not only has the 'shell' for protection but mimics the colouring of a Ladybird to make it look poisonous - double protection!
TFS this beauty,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Sumon,

I should imagine you were super pleased to get this one so well..It looks like something I would have overlooked...I try to keep my peripheral vision going 24/7, but small even though well coloured, sometimes escapes me. It certainly did not escape you. Very nice image and such an unusual looking insect! I am off to look for more images of same..

excellent detail and focus for a post that I really like

have a nice W.end sERGIO

My first sighting of this amazing looking Beetle, Sumon. I guess it is a novelty for all.
As usual, a razor sharp and artistically composed shot. The Bettle looks like it is made of fine glass. Perfect details and colours, and those in-focus veins on the wide leaf make a lovely background.
Thanks and best regards.

World is beautiful --So are you..
You love the nature -- so It's true.

A nice capture.

Hi Sumon
First time I have seen this beetle on Haraprasan photo dedicated to you ;-) Here we can see another beautiful photo. Perfect sharpness, nice light I like it very much

Great sharpness and clarity.
Stunning colours.

Hi Sumon!

Isn't it a surprising and strange creature? You have put it so well on stage! The technical aspects of the picture are perfect as usually. I like the narrative notes very much. Indeed, sometimes the way that lead us to a picture is as interesting as the content of the picture.

Kind regards

Markus

Sumon, un precioso documento de este tipo de insectos que no conocía. Ya no digo nada de luz, colores y esas cosas las tienes superadas y veo que te recreas, como siempre, en mejorar la toma artísticamente.
