I present this beautiful and elegant butterfly - the Pioneer (the wet-season form). It was a sunny morning and I found it to be very swift and restless. Getting a proper shot was not being easy and among all the bad ones, this I found to be OK. A more parallel POV would have been to my liking but this one was not co-operative at all. Shot taken hand-held in bright natural lighting. Hope everyone like it.

-----------------------------------
The Pioneer or Caper White, (Belenois aurota), is a small to medium sized butterfly of the Family Pieridae, that is, the Yellows and Whites, which is found in South Asia and Africa. In Africa it is also known as the African Caper White or Brown-veined White, and is well-known during summer and autumn when large numbers migrate north-east over the interior.

Wet Season Form : The upperside of males is white with the forewing having the costa from base to base of vein 11 dusky black and then jet black continuing into a widened and curving short streak along the disco-cellulars to the lower apex of the cell; apical area diagonally with the termen black, the former with six elongate outwardly pointed spots of the ground-colour enclosed one in each of the interspaces 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9. Hind wing : uniform, the black along the venation on the underside seen through by transparency; termen between veins 2 and 6 somewhat broadly black, with a series of four round spots of the ground-colour in the interspaces; below vein 2 and above vein 6 the termen is very narrowly black. Underside : fore wing white, markings similar, more clearly defined, the white spots within the black apical area larger. Hind wing : yellowish white, all the reins very broadly bordered with black; interspaces 1, 2, 6 and 7 with cross-bars of black, beyond which there is a subterminal, somewhat broad, transverse band of black between veins 2 and 6. Cilia of both fore and hind wings white alternated with black. The ground-colour on both upper and under sides variable, often cream-coloured above; beneath : in some specimens, the base of cell and the elongate spots in apical area of fore wing, and the whole surface of the hind wing varies to rich chrome-yellow.

Female similar; the black markings on both upper and under sides broader, the white spots on black apical area of fore wing often sub-obsolete above.

Antennae in both sexes black, sparsely sprinkled with white dots; head, thorax and abdomen above and below white; thorax above often bluish grey.

Distribution : Sri Lanka, the Himalayas from Kashmir to Sikkim at elevations below 6000 feet, and through the plains to Southern India. In the Nilgiris observed up to 8000 feet. To the west it spreads through Persia and Arabia to East Africa. The species occurs over the greater part of sub-Saharan Africa.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Pieridae
Genus: Belenois
Species: B. aurota

Namaste Sumon,
I surely missed several pictures in the last weeks because I had only limited time to visit TN.
Here, you show an excellent picture of aurota, well focused and sharp ... and without any sign
of overexposure. Depth of field is well selected so that only the butterfly and the flower are sharp
and the entire background sufficiently blurred.
I had the chance to observe the species in India and in large individual numbers also in Tanzania.
Best wishes, Peter

Merhaba Sumon,
Thank you for sharing with us this beauty captured from a lateral POV in fine focus and exposure under ideal lighting conditions which demonstrates the fine sculpturings of the wings perfectly. A beautiful composition indeed!
Mehmet

Hi Sumon,

I don't have to see a name to recognize one of your butterflys. They are always extraoridinarily beautiful. Every one is in a magnificent pose with the riches colors and sharpest details. This Pioneer is no exception. I love the angle created by the butterfly and the leaf. Another picture perfect post - the composition is fantastic.

Jane

hello sumon,

you and your butterflies make a great combo which no one can offer with such consistency, i can tell that this is your image witout looking at your name.

This is another fine capture. the pioneer image is crisp with lovely composition and fine pov, the details are very good in this sharp image,

I am always suprised how do you manage getting so many species. here i hardly can see any new species other then a common few and that too very rare. Looks like i have to search orissa for butterflies.

It was so nice of you to make a call, it was great talking to you,

well done once again,
tfs & regards

Hi Sumon

A fine shot of this Caper White, a species we have in Australia though it goes by the scientific name of B. java. Nevetherless it looks almost the ame as this one from India.
I think the composition is just fine, great sharpness and pattern details as always and presented on a good OOF background.

Chris

This is a lovely butterfly and you present it very well. Well captured with a good composition and sharpness.

Pod względem technicznym fotka jest perfekcyjna: światło, barwa, kompozycja i ostrość są bardzo dobre. Gratuluję!
