Today I present this very common butterfly which can be seen in abundance everywhere - the Common Grass Yellow. But I always find them difficult to capture because of their vibrant yellow colour, which always seem to reflect, and also for their swiftness. This day was cloudy and wet and hence I got it sitting still, also the subdued light was perfect for shooting. Shot taken hand held, hope everyone like it.

------------------------------
The Large or Common Grass Yellow, Eurema hecabe, is a small pierid butterfly species found in Asia. They are found flying close to the ground and are found in open grass and scrub habitats. It is simply known as "the grass yellow" in parts of its range; the general term otherwise refers to the entire genus Eurema.

Upperside: yellow, variable in tint from sulphur to rich lemon-yellow according to locality with a light or heavy rainfall. Fore wing: apex and termen deep black, this colour continued narrowly along the costal margin to base of wing, near which it often becomes diffuse; the inner margin of the black area from costa to vein 4 very oblique and irregular, between veins 2 and 4 excavate on the inner side, this excavation outwardly rounded between the veins and inwardly toothed on vein 3; below vein 2 the black area is suddenly dilated into a square spot which occupies the whole of the tornal angle; the inner margin of this dilatation is variable, in the typical form slightly concave. Hind wing: terminal margin with a narrow black band which is attenuated anteriorly and posteriorly ; dorsal margin broadly paler than the ground-colour.

Underside : yellow, generally a slightly paler shade than that of the upperside, with the following reddish-brown markings. Fore wing: two small spots or specks in basal half of cell and a reniform spot or ring on the discocellulars. Hind wing: a slightly curved subbasal series of three small spots, an irregular slender ring or spot on the discocellulars, followed by a highly irregular, curved, transverse, discal series of spots or specks, some or all of which are often obsolescent. On both fore and hind wings the veins that attain the costal and terminal margins end in minute reddish-brown specks. Antenna greyish yellow, the club black; head, thorax and abdomen yellow, shaded with fuscous scales; beneath: the palpi, thorax and abdomen yellowish white. The sex-mark seen from above appears as a thickening of the basal half of the median vein on the fore wing.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Pieridae
Subfamily: Coliadinae

Hola Sumon,
deliciosa captura,
tonos y colores,
buen foco y encuadre,
saludos

I too avoid these butterflies, mainly because of their abundance, Sumon.
You are right in your observation; the yellow colour is dicey and it is difficult to get the right tone. You have done it to perfection in this picture, thanks to the prevailing weather conditions plus your acumen as a nature photographer.
I love the green of the acacia combining so well with the yellow of the butterfly.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Sumon
excellent capture for this beautiful pierid species. masterpiece of yours. using sharpness and focus wonderful. POV, contrast, composition with fern perfect. Thanks for sharing this beauty. best wishes

Hello Sumon,

The texture of the wings is very well rendered as the image is sharp showing even fine veins. Moreover the pattern can also observed in great details. You have made excelent use of the existing light so that colors are well saturated and vivid.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Sumon!

I hate the word "common". I know its used for the scientific names, but as a nature lover I find it disparaging. How can so beautiful creatures like this one just be common...

You have captured this butterfly in a perfect manner. I also believe that you have avoided the trap of colour adulteration. For me, they look natural.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Sumon,
Even if this butterfly is rather common, it is a beauty and like you say, the yellow butterflies are always a challenge for the photographer. In this picture you caught the vibrant yellow color of the wings superbly and the contrast with the green environment is most beautiful.
Thanks so much
Anne

Hello Sumon,
A perfect closed-wing macro of a Common Grass Yellow. I can see why you composed it like this: to emphasise the contrast between the dark BG and the wings.
A text-book illustration of a fresh specimen that is a joy to view and thanks for sharing it1
All the best,
Ivan

You are certainly a regimented artist Sumon. I like the simplicity of the frame at the bottom to accompany another wonderful butterfly image...as usual...well done...who could expect more?!
