Today I present this most beautiful butterfly - the Five-bar Swordtail. Though this was taken long time back I did not post it because I was not happy with the quality. I could not resist the temptation today and I think this is the first time that this species is featuring on TN. This picture was taken inside Chandaka WLS, hand-held and in fading light, hence the use of flash lighting. Hope everyone like it.

--------------------------------------
Five-bar Swordtail, Graphium antiphates, is a species of papilionid butterfly found in South Asia.

Upperside of males and females white. Fore wing: cell crossed by five short black bands, of which the basal extends to the dorsum, the sub-basal into interspace 1, the medial and pre-apical up to the median vein, and the apical or fifth along the discocellulars; this last extends broadly on both sides of the veinlets and terminates at the lower apex of the cell; beyond these are broad postdiscal and terminal black transverse bands from costa to tornal angle; the two bands coalesce below vein 4 and terminate in a point at the tornus; the white portions of the cell anteriorly overlaid with pale green; short macular hyaline green bands between the black cellular apical band and the discal band and anteriorly between the latter and the terminal band. Hind wing: basal three-fourths uniform white, with black markings on the underside that show through by transparency; terminal fourth dark grey traversed by a curved irregular subterminal series of black lunules that ends in a black tornal spot and a terminal black band that follows the indentations of the wing; the emargination below the black tornal spot edged with ochraceous; the tail blackish-grey, edged and tipped with white.

Underside; fore wing similar with similar markings, but the green shading over the white portions in the basal half of the cell more decided; the discal and terminal transverse black bands separate, not joined posteriorly, the former edged posteriorly on both sides by dark grey due to the black on the upperside that shows through by transparency. Hind wing: basal half green, outer half white; a large black tornal spot; a black line along the dorsum that curves above the tornal spot outwards to vein 2; a straight subbasal black band from costa across cell that terminates on vein 2, where it joins the dorsal black line; a broader black band from costa across apex of cell extended into base of interspace 3; an irregular discal series of black markings curved inwards posteriorly towards the tornal spot; a subterminal series of very small slender black lunules in pairs, the ground-colour on the inner side of these darkened to rich ochreous-yellow; lastly, a series of short terminal black bars in the interspaces so arranged as to follow indentations of the termen; tail dusky black edged with white. Antenna black; head and thorax anteriorly with a broad black medial band, rest of thorax bluish; abdomen white, marked beneath on each side by a black stripe.

Hello Sumon,
thank you for posting this nice picture of the beautiful Graphium antiphates which I could observe
on Sumatra couple of years ago without an Olympus E-1. You focused precisely on the butterfly and
reproduced the colours in an excellent way.
Best wishes, Peter

It is true Mana'esque style Sumon. It is good technically but nature decided that an odd colour combination be the one for this...in India where all colours are glorified and enjoyed, you have perhaps a different way of looking at hings...same is true in music...We use the chromatic scale...while other countries use different..same as in language...but music is much easier to translate..and your eye is attuned from birth...Lovely shot..

Hello Sumon,
A fine capture of this Graphium species of swallowtail, the POV being fine but making total sharpness difficult. However most of it is sharp and shown in great lighting with the fine use of flash.
A nice image of a spectacular butterfly and thanks for sharing it,
Ivan

Hi Sumon,

This Five-bar Swordtail certainly is a most beautiful butterfly. The colors are stunning - seems to me I have only seen green in a butterfly once before. Fantastic details showing off the head, body, magnificent wing markings and the tail. I love the pose following the contour of the leaf. Perfect setting, background and composition.

Hola Sr. Sumon.
The colors of butterfly matches well with the rest of the photo. Great work My friend, never seen this before.
Luis52

I agree with you, Sumon. I think this is the very first picture of this species on TN. Congratulations!
The picture is very good, contrary to your assumption. The details are perfect and the colours are pretty good, though flash light sometimes does subdue the brilliance.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Sumon.
May be quality is not the high end in selected aspects but this is nature photography and subject is really has one value. First of all this is rare and very beautiful species and specimen of butterfly. It is really wonderful as well as the pictures scene at whole. Selected POV is great and composition of the image is blameless. You have use flash excellently. Colours and illumination of the entire scene are perfect too. What is not very good at the shot? I think nothing is. My kind regards, TFS and all the best.
Alexei.

Ciao Sumon,
bellissima immagine di questo Papilionide catturato con ottima definizione e con un eccellente POV in una bella posa che esalta i magnifici colori e disegni delle ali, mi piace molto anche la composizione con la prospettiva diagonale.

Hi Sumon!

I believe you have made the right choice when you decided to post this picture. Sometimes the general interest overrides the questions of quality. I mean the fact that this butterfly never has been posted on TN before is very important. I would like to congratulate you for this. As far as the quality is concerned, it's fairly good considering the difficult conditions you experienced. It seems to me that I can recognize the traces of some postprocessing, but here's nothing really bad. It's a fine and highly valuable posting.

Kind regards

Markus
