[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I dedicate this shell which I don't know of what species with barnacles all over it again the species of barnacles attached I don't know to our Shell photography expert Mehmet (matatur). Hope you like it. Thank you very much for viewing.

A barnacle is a type of arthropod belonging to infraclass Cirripedia in the subphylum Crustacea, and is hence distantly related to crabs and lobsters. Barnacles are exclusively marine, and tend to live in shallow and tidal waters, typically in erosive settings. They are sessile suspension feeders, and have two nektonic larval stages.

Around 1,220 barnacle species are currently known. The name "Cirripedia" is Latin, meaning "curl-footed".

Barnacles are encrusters, attaching themselves permanently to a hard substrate. The most common, "acorn barnacles" (Sessilia) are sessile, growing their shells directly onto the substrate. The order Pedunculata ("goose barnacles" and others) attach themselves by means of a stalk.

Most barnacles are suspension feeders; they dwell continually in their shell - which is usually constructed of six plates - and reach into the water column with modified legs. These feathery appendages beat rhythmically to draw plankton and detritus into the shell for consumption.

Other members of the class have quite a different mode of life. For example, members of the genus Sacculina are parasitic, dwelling within crabs.

Barnacles are always marine. While they have been found at water depths up to 600m, most barnacles inhabit shallow waters, with 75% of species living in water depths of less than 100m, and 25% inhabiting the intertidal zone. Within the intertidal zone, different species of barnacle live in very tightly constrained locations, allowing the exact height of an assemblage above or below sea level to be precisely determined.

Since the intertidal zone periodically desiccates, barnacles are well adapted against water loss. Their calcite shells are impermeable, and they possess two plates which they can slide across their aperture when not feeding. These plates also protect against predation.

Mehmet will love this one HP...I am also a shell appreciation person type....stuff... I spent many days walking the ocean shores in Norcal...my remote California home was only across a long sand dunes to the ocean so it was a daily regimen...Very nicely seen...memories of the good old days for me!

The influence of Mehmet on all of us seems to be getting deeper, HP :-).
If I am not wrong, this is your first shell on TN.
I wouldn't compare it with Mehmet's work as far as the presentation is concerned.
However, this very complicated looking shell has been well captured as it is.
I guess Mehemet would like to react to it quite vigorously.
Thus your dedication of this picture to him is quite apt.

Merhaba Haraprasan,
And thank you indeed for this fine dedication my friend, I am honored. Your Turritella-like shell is so much encrusted with variously sized cirripeds, it is almost impossible to identify it, but no matter, it is a lovely capture which pleasantly reminds us that it is almost the right time to take a dip in the ocean, always a pleasant experience for me! I am a little curious about those similarly sized brownish granulations among the beach sand Haraprasan, any idea what they might be, my friend?
