This is for joey (Joe Kellard) for dedicating a beautiful closeup shot of a jumping spider to me. THANK YOU JOE.

Mudskippers are members of the subfamily Oxudercinae (tribe: Periophthalmini), within the family Gobiidae (Gobies). They are completely amphibious fish, uniquely adapted to intertidal habitats, unlike most fish in such habitats, which survive the retreat of the tide by hiding under wet seaweed or in tidal pools.
Mudskippers are quite active when out of water, feeding and interacting with one another, for example to defend their territories.

They are found only in tropical and subtropical regions, including all the Indo-Pacific and the Atlantic coast of Africa.

Compared with fully aquatic gobies, these fish present a range of peculiar behavioural and physiological adaptations to an amphibious lifestyle. These include:
a) Anatomical and behavioural adaptations that allow them to move effectively on land as well as in the water.
b) The ability to breathe through their skin and the lining of their mouth (the mucosa) and throat (the pharynx). This is only possible when the mudskipper is wet, limiting mudskippers to humid habitats and requiring that they keep themselves moist. This mode of breathing, similar to that employed by amphibians, is known as cutaneous air breathing. Another important adaptation that aids breathing are their enlarged gill chambers, where they retain air. These act like a scuba diver's oxygen cylinders, and supply oxygen for respiration also while on land.
c) Digging of deep burrows in soft sediments that allow the fish to thermoregulate; avoid marine predators during the high tide when the fish and burrow are submerged; and for laying their eggs.

Even when their burrow is submerged, mudskippers maintain an air pocket inside it, which allows them to breathe in conditions of very low oxygen concentration.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Perciformes
Family: Gobiidae
Subfamily: Oxudercinae

Lastly I don't know the exact genus or species of this mudskipper. Any marine expert may help identifying this species.

Hope you will like it. And thank you very much for viewing.

You experience another change of topics with this fine mudskipper capture Haraprasan, not an easy thing to go contrary to your accustomed style, but you are very good in such topic reversals my friend, the present post being a good example. A perfect shot in fine exp. and focus to demonstrate the camouflage capabilities of a small fish even a little out of its element. TFS my friend.

Hi Haraprasan,

My first thought was how did you see this. And my second one was what is it? Mudskipper? Thank you for the introduction. The only thing that ruins his camouflage is that fantastic eye. Great shot.

Hi Haraprasan,
Wonderful shot of this mud-skipper and you have done well to spot it at the first place. I would have definitely trampled it. It seems to be well camouflaged too. Very neat and sharp image and you low POV works well here in portraying it. Those eyes look interesting. Your trip was very fruitful indeed. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.
