This is a Red whiskered bulbul one of the common bird in our place. I was lucky to find this one along with its small nest, eggs, new born, feeding etc. From now on I will be posting this as a series. Hope you will like it.

The Red-whiskered Bulbul, Pycnonotus jocosus, is a member of the bulbul family. It is resident in tropical Asia from Pakistan and India through to southeast Asia and China. It has been introduced to New South Wales, Los Angeles, Mauritius and Florida.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
The Red-whiskered Bulbul has a distinct red ear patch, and red tail coverts. Both features are very distinctive from other birds. This bulbul averages seven inches in length and can weigh from 23 to 42 grams. The birds are brownish above and white below their stomach region from birth until an age six months. The head is black with a pointed crest and there is a red patch, the "whiskers", behind the eye. The beak is slender and notched. Their nostrils are ovalshaped, and have bristles. The legs and toes have little strength and are usually short. The wings are short and rounded and the tail shape varies from rounded to squared. Immature bulbuls resemble adults except that they lack the red marking on the head.

BEHAVIOR:
Outside the breeding season these bulbuls tend to be rowdy. They often roam around in noisy flocks and roost communally. The voices of the Red-whiskered Bulbul are loud and clear consisting of short loud notes and some warbling songs. These birds are not big travelers and rarely migrate.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Pycnonotidae
Genus: Pycnonotus

Hello My dear friend Haraprasan,
Wonderful shot of this beautifully coloured and voiced Red whiskered bulbul. TFS my friend,
Cheers,
Bayram

This is a very pretty Bulbul, HP. It must be native to your area because I have seen only the red and yellow vented Bulbuls in and around Delhi.
The image captured from the front is quite sharp and obviously colourful. The sun overhead glints off the eye of the bird and shows the perfect focus.
TFS and all the best.
Ram

Hallo Haraprasan
A delightful portrait of a most charming bird. Good composition with great details and colours. The red feathers on the cheek are beautiful as well as the hood on the head. Well seen and captured. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day.
Kind regards.
Anna

Hello Haraprasan,
Fine capture of a Red-whiskered Bulbul caught in a nice pose and taken from a POV that shows the red head patches and catchlight in the eye well.
Thanks for sharing this fine image of a species that I have seen several times but have not been able to get close enough to to photograph like this.
Ivan

It is a fine thing that I have this book which Fartash sent me...I can now relate to this bird as per the ID from you and the book...Very nicely done and I might stop back on this later today if I have some spare time.

Hi Haraprasan.
Funny and bit and so cute at the same time bird. And funny is the substrate where the bird has settled down. Wonderful details and natural colours of the image, excellent strong vertical framing. Well done and TFS.
Alexei.

A fine looking bulbul Haraprasan, but I'd prefer a more natural looking perch my friend, still, the frontal POV provides excellent plumage and coloration details in this sharply focused capture against a clear BG. TFS and cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Haraprasan,

I don't think I have seen this Bulbul before. Crest, face, and plummage are lovely. I love that red patch. A wonderful pose making him look very stately.

Hello Haraprasan,

Superb picture of this bulbul. Very good POV and focus. Great colours. Very nice eye contact.
Cheers,
Mariki

What a nice sharp shot. Wonderfully simple, well composed, great stuff. :)

Great looking bird HP, nice color and good exposure.
I like the POV and framing too. Well focused and detailed, but a bit faster on the s-speed would improve the image IMHO. I would've used a slightly higher ISO, and again, F/16 is bit much for this one..
Well done!
Howard
