PREDATOR Vs. PREY - V

PREDATOR:

Some type of ROBBER FLY

Flies in the Diptera family Asilidae are commonly known as robber flies. The family Asilidae contains about 7,100 described species worldwide. All robber flies have stout, spiny legs, a dense moustache of bristles on the face (mystax), and 3 simple eyes (ocelli) in a characteristic depression between their two large compound eyes. The mystax helps protect the head and face when the fly encounters prey bent on defense. The antennae are short, 3-segmented, sometimes with a bristle-like structure called an arista. The short, strong proboscis is used to stab and inject victims with saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes which paralyze and digest the insides; the fly then sucks the liquefied meal through the proboscis. Many species have long, tapering abdomens, sometimes with a sword-like ovipositor. Others are fat-bodied bumblebee mimics. Adult robber flies attack other flies, beetles, butterflies and moths, various bees, dragon and damselflies, ichneumon wasps, grasshoppers, and some spiders.

Some type of PICTURE WING FLY

The name picture-winged fly is sometimes used in a colloquial sense for various fly families in the superfamily Tephritoidea that have patterns of bands or spots on the wings, but is more correctly applied solely to the family Ulidiidae (which was formerly known as Otitidae). This is a large and diverse cosmopolitan family, and, as in related families, most species are herbivorous or saprophagous.

Most species share with the Tephritidae an unusual elongated projection of the anal cell in the wing, but can be differentiated by the smoothly-curving subcostal vein.

Thanks a lot for viewing.

Hello Haraprasan,

Excellent picture of this robber fly busy with its prey (I do not think it is a fly with such antennae). Predator and prey are very sharp. Very nice colours. I am curious to know if someone will be able to identify the prey.
Cheers,
Mariki

The Robber Fly is holding the other fly like a baby in its arms, but it is no mother-child scene, HP. The killer weapon of the Predator is at work, paralysing the prey.
Very good macro image with fine details on both the insects. The hairy eye of the Robber is particularly very well captured.
Another powerful image in your series.
TFS

Hi Haraprasan,
excellent side POV to potray this Robber Fly with it's prey, clear and well defined DOF with good detail - well done!
Paul

Ha! Cute apology....Certainly a fine sharp and clean image...again as with another I said this AM...this is one of your top drawer images HP! It is not only good it is also quite interesting. When I was a child..I had some much time on my hands I used to wait for a spider to catch something in its web and then watch as it rolled it up for later...life in nature is so interesting yes?
Bob

Espectacular toma Haraprasan, con mucha crudeza y realismo.

Hallo Haraprasan
Time is rather limited today for a proper comment, but I cannot pass without saying a few words. You have captured these two insects closely showing fine details, especially the clarity of the robberfly's eye and the hair covering its body. A great photograph with much to appreciate. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.
Anna
