The Purple Sunbird, Cinnyris asiaticus, is a sunbird. The sunbirds are a group of very small Old World passerine birds which feed largely on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young. Flight is fast and direct on their short wings. Most species can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird, but usually perch to feed most of the time.

Purple Sunbird is an abundant resident breeder across tropical southern Asia from the Persian Gulf to Southeast Asia. One to three eggs are laid in a suspended nest in a tree.

Purple Sunbirds are tiny, only 10cm long. They have medium-length thin down-curved bills and brush-tipped tubular tongues, both adaptations to their nectar feeding.

The adult male is mainly glossy purple. The eclipse male has a yellow-grey upperparts and a yellow breast with a blue central streak extending to the belly. The female has yellow-grey upperparts and yellowish under parts, and a faint supercilium. The call is a humming zit zit.

This species is found in a variety of habitats with some trees, including forest and cultivation.

Wish you a Happy New Year and thanks for the photo - not easy to catch the sunbird sitting around! In my opinion the green area is to big, if you cut parts of it, it would emphasize the bird! Anyway, great shot,

I like your image with the cheerful colors. That is a beautiful bird. I like how it is isolated against the out of focus background. I tried a workshop to see if perhaps there was enough resolution to crop our a bit of the distracting lighter elements in the background.

I hope 2008 brings you lots of wonderful photo opportunities.

Looking at this picture makes me envy you in a way. I have been trying to capture a similar bird for the last few weeks and have never had luck. They are very energetic, and are up and down all the time. This is a brilliant bright and vibrant photograph. All the birds and insects with these metallic colours really amaze me. I have also posted a insect with metallic blue colours recently and was very surprised at the absolute brightness wings of the wasp once the photo was processed. Let’s get back to your photo. A real neat shot, well presented and worth a smiley. Thanks for sharing.
