Today I dedicate this mantis nymph capture to our SumonDa (Mana)for his beautiful dedication of olive ridley turtle for me. THANK YOU SUMON DA.

The praying mantis is named for its prominent front legs, which are bent and held together at an angle that suggests the position of prayer. The larger group of these insects is more properly called the praying mantids. Mantis refers to the genus mantis, to which only some praying mantids belong.

By any name, these fascinating insects are formidable predators. They have triangular heads poised on a long "neck," or elongated thorax. Mantids can turn their heads 180 degrees to scan their surroundings with two large compound eyes and three other simple eyes located between them.

Typically green or brown and well camouflaged on the plants among which they live, mantis lie in ambush or patiently stalk their quarry. They use their front legs to snare their prey with reflexes so quick that they are difficult to see with the naked eye. Their legs are further equipped with spikes for snaring prey and pinning it in place.

Moths, crickets, grasshoppers, flies, and other insects are usually the unfortunate recipients of unwanted mantid attention. However, the insects will also eat others of their own kind. The most famous example of this is the notorious mating behavior of the adult female, who sometimes eats her mate just after—or even during—mating. Yet this behavior seems not to deter males from reproduction.

Females regularly lay hundreds of eggs in a small case, and nymphs hatch looking much like tiny versions of their parents.

Did you know? Praying mantids’ excellent eyesight allows some to see movement up to 60 feet (18 meters) away.

A lovely dedication to one of our comrades who like you has an eye for the wonders of nature in all its details and brilliance.I like the PoV wherein your subject is seen hanging on to the branch and loking intensley onto your lens. yes, those powerful eyes depite being small has a superb contact with your focus.

Thanks you very much for remembering me and I feel so happy to get this wonderful image as dedication. This Mantis is so perfectly camouflaged on the guava tree stem waiting for prey. Those eyes look huge and so efficient to spot movement from so far away (now I know why I cannot see them). Very neat and sharp image with nice colours. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

A wonderful dedication to Sumon who has presented us with so many magnificent nature photos. I'm amazed that you even saw this manis who was so well cammouflaged by the green leaves. The head is wonderful! You captured it perfectly.

Ahhh yes...he is a good man...and a good friend of India in nature as you are as well...there is some difference in the ones I have seen and this one..or perhaps it is the lighting..not sure..but this one has different eyes colour and a slightly duller sheen to the body...which makes it blend in very well in surroundings...

Hello HP,
Figuring this Mantis out would have been difficult if you had not mentioned the name in the note. It is so very effectively camouflaged in the leaves of the tree.
Fantastic capture of the insect clinging to the branch upside-down. Only the light green of the triangular head helps in finding it out.
Very deft capture and a valuable dedication to Sumon.

I had to open the thumbnail to work out what this image showed.
It is in fact a great macro of a Preying Mantis nymph showing what fine camouflage these can have in a sharp and well composed shot with a fine natural BG.
A great tribute to Sumon, not only a talented photographer, but sharing a great love of nature with us.
