PREDATOR
THE CUNNING CAMOUFLAGING CRAB SPIDER ( Misumenoides formocipes)

WEAPON : Camouflage and deadly venom.

Misumenoides is a genus of spiders in the family Thomisidae. Spiders in this family are commonly called "crab" or "flower" spiders. These are not active hunters but have very good camouflaging techniques.

Female M. aleatorius, while similar to the common goldenrod spider (Misumena vatia) is not as large, and can be distinguished by the inverted 'V' marking on its back (with the point of the V closer to the cephalothorax), and the 'mask' over its eyes. In most respects this spider behaves like the goldenrod spider, also commonly hunting in goldenrod sprays in the fall. It tends to take smaller prey, however, avoiding the bumblebees and large butterflies in favor of honeybees, large flies and small butterflies such as skippers. Male Misumenoides are quite distinctive, having relatively small, greenish abdomens, and proportionately long, dark olive-green front legs. They are found on a wide variety of plants as they wander in search of females in late summer and early fall.

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Arachnida
Order: Araneae
Family: Thomisidae
Genus: Misumenoides F. O. P-Cambridge, 1900
Diversity 32 species

Hi Haraprasan,

Excellent close-up capture of wildlife action with nice composition, sharp details and bright natural colours.

Hi Haraprasan

I find this shot slightly unnerving, I have a mild phobia of spiders and this one makes me shudder. Lovely colours in the shot and good timing also.

Jai

Some of your natural butterfly's look pretty rugged...like the mountain man grizzled look which I have and folks stare who live in the city. Fine focus and good notations!
Bob

Hola Hara, días ya sin visitarte y sin votarte ...
Opoertuno momento el captado, con un buen encuadre y naturalidad en los colores.

Hi Haraprasan,

Excellent shot of this Crab Spider attacking the butterfly. You caught the action perfectly. The pretty butterfly probably never saw him. Wonderful colors and details and great timing.

Jane

Hello Haraprasan,

What a drama you captured here!
Spiders are wonderfully adapted to being predators! You would imagine that by the size of its prey, it would not need to eat for many days after this!

Very crisp, clear images. Vibrant colours and nicely composed!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
