Catopsilia pyranthe.
The Mottled Emigrant.

Catopsilia pyranthe (Latreille 1758)

Genus: Catopsilia
Family: Pieridae
Order: Lepidoptera
Class: Insecta

Wingspan: 70 - 90 mm.

The Mottled Emigrant, Catopsilia pyranthe, is a medium sized butterfly of the family of Pieridae (Whites), living in South and Southeast Asia and parts of Australia. An established migrant in India, the butterfly can be met in the subtropical and tropical parts of the Indian subcontinent throughout the year, rather common from July to September, common during October to March. Less common in the hot and dry months from April to June, higher frequency is promoted by the monsoon again.

A powerful, restless and very determined flyer that is able to take large distances, the butterfly can also be found peacefully sucking nectar from blossoms in any kind of open space in India, even in the parks of the big city of New Delhi - in the few tiny greens of densely populated quarters as well as in a spacious and very tidy park like the one the picture was taken:

Raj Ghat.

So we don't have to run after this pretty butterfly.
Let us invite it to dinner, instead.

Life history and host plants:

The host plants of the species include Cassia species such as C. fistula, C. javanica, C. garrettiana, C. bakeriana, C. auriculata, Senna alata, Crotolaria spp., Ormocarpum cochinchinense, Sesbania spp. and Colocasia.

The development period from egg to adult is 22 to 29 days, allowing up to 11-12 generations a year.

The camera:

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 17mm, F/5.6, 1/1000 sec., ISO-125; no tripod, no flash; 24.10.2006, 12:58 local time.

Postwork:

Photoshop Elements, cropped, downsized to the web, selectively sharpened, noise removal on BG, burntool on white flowers, brightness, contrast and saturation slightly adjusted.

Hi Peter

I do enjoy your butterfly photos. You really do take super images. This is lovely. You show the beautiful wings clearly. Sharpness is spot on and the detail in the wing is defined well. :-)

Hi Peter.
You are really Great Master of work with paints and light. How subtle your colour tones, how soft and delicate lighting. The reflection of white and light-green colours are perfect and beautiful. In a combination to amazing accuracy of reproduction of smallest butterfly's and flower's details, precise depth of field and the artistic point of view it creates an charming picture on its beauty. BRAVO and TFS.

Hallo Peter,
Anne

Wow! Peter, this is a masterpiece! What a great lemony colours! Love the blue parts with the nice green tones. Moment with the proboscis in the flower is impressive. Sharpness wonderful and the texture too! With all around the flowers it is a great composition and no oe parts on the flowers!!! Superb post!
Thank you and best regards mf!

Hi Peter

Seems like you got this Sony Cybershot worked out to the T especially as far as butterflies and macros are concerned. This emigrant can be glad it came to your 'studio' for its passport photo. On TN it has now become a world traveller as it just paid me a visit here in sunny South Africa.

If a prominent butterfly specialist such as Pam says: "I do enjoy your butterfly photos. You really do take super images", then you must know you are in distinguished company which I am sure includes only a hand picked few.

You’ve captured this feeding butterfly at the precise moment when its proboscis was deeply inserted into the nectar ‘cup’ of the flower. Your ability to turn this into an exquisite piece of artwork has hardly any equal. The soft light and amazing tones rendered a perfectly pleasing reproduction of this fine specimen. The composition is great, the details are spotless and perfect, the DOF covered the whole flower and the butterfly, and the exposure was masterfully controlled even considering the fact that the white flower shows no spots or areas of OE.

Superb work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Peter,

lovely pose and good notes

Namaste ...

Hi Peter,
I did not know you had come to India , at least i could have spoken to you. Are you still here , if yes shoot me an email

Hello Peter, this is a very nice macro, you've handled the exposure well and there are lovely crisp details on the butterfly. I really like the butterfly's tongue is caught deep in the flower feeding. Well done.

Hello Peter,
This is a very nice and so well composed picture. I like this great POV you had and those superb details that you caught. Those pale colors must not be easy to calibrate and you did great. Good exposure and DOF too. I also like this very nice BG and details on the butterfly. Thanks also for this very interesting picture in WS. I'm an admirer of Gandhi's philosophy (as you can see in my intro) and I liked to see this park dedicated in the memory of this great soul. Thanks,
Claudine

bonjour peter
bravo.
