Hello dear friends,
Today I present to you Brown headed Barbet/Ceylon Large Green Barbet/ (Megalaima zeylanica zeylanica) taken from my bedroom window.

When we moved into this house in the end of summer, I was happy to see my neighbour’s guava tree overlooking one of my bedroom windows. Because I thought the fruits would attract some nice visitors. But as days passed by I was quite dismayed by the fact that any fruit I saw was ripening was disappearing and with no trace of birds. I mentioned to my husband that the kids in the neighbourhood must be picking the fruits even before it could attract a bird. The funny thing is I n’ver really saw any kid climbing up the tree! But I forgot those were hot days…birds did visit, but that was early morning when I would be busy in my kitchen. And by the time I was free the sun was up and blazing. Maybe they did come when the sun lost steam in the afternoon, but I wasn’t around at home to watch. And November happened, late mornings became pleasant and one day as I was passing through the room, I saw a head perk up from among the branches…there it was feeding on a guava under the hidden branches. I reached for my camera…and rest is history…
This doesn’t give a complete view of the bird, but I felt the shot gave a nice perspective of the different colours that make up this cute bird.

Thanks for looking:)
Silpa
------------------------------------------------------
Brown headed Barbet/Ceylon Large Green Barbet/
Size: Slightly larger than Myna Langth-27 cm(10.5 in)

Field Characters: A dumpy, heavy-billed bird, grass green above with brown head, neck and breast streaked with white. Lower breast and abdomen pale green. Undersurface of tail bluish. A large conspicuous naked orange-coloured patch (it looks more of yellow here this being non breeding season!) around eye which extends to the base of the bill. Sexes alike. Noisy dipping flight. Singly or in parties, in fruiting trees.

Colour of some bare parts: Iris brown to Indian red; bill reddish orange, mouth pale pink; legs and feet lemon yellow; claws dusky

Status and Habitat: Resident. Not common. Confined to decidous areas.

Distribution Outside India: Sri Lanka.

General Habits : Are arboreal and entirely frugivorous, though flying termites and insects are occasionally eaten. Large gatherings will collect to feast on ripening figs of banyan, papal, guava etc. These birds play an important role in seed dispersal. Occasionally damage orchards and are also partial to flowers as Salmalia and Erythrina.

The dipping noisy flight consists of few rapid wing beats followed by a short glide. The call of the species can be heard as “kor-r-r kutroo-kutroo”(thus locals in southern state of India -Kerala giving it the name “kutturuvan”). The ‘kutroo’ is reiterated ad naseum throughout the hotter parts of the day. As soon as one begins another in the distance is sure to join at once, and an uneven duet (or maybe trio or quartet) is kept up for a considerable time.

Nesting: Season –cheifly February to Apil. Nest-is like that of a woodpecker, a hole in a rotten branch or stem cut by the bird themselves at any height between 6-50 ft from ground. Eggs- normally 3 pure white longish oval.

Hello Silpa,
What a superb capture in this well-taken opportunity from your bedroom window!
This Brown-headed Barbet turned his head nicely with his bit of guava fruit to allow you to focus in on him well with total sharpness. The lighting and OOF natural BG allow him to show up well.
The result is one of the best portraits of this species on TN. I have seen it in Goa but never got the chance to take a shot.
Well done and thanks for delighting us with this portrait of a thief!
Best wishes,
Ivan

Amazing capture of this new bird to me.
It's incredible the way the feathers change of colour from brown to green when going down to the body.
Besides that, you've got a very nice light and profile pose on the bird.

Fascinating bird. Lovely colors. The greens are particularly vivid. Clean and clear shot. And you got that glint in its eye.
Sorry I haven't been around much. Life gets busy sometimes and I tend to withdraw at other times. I'm an odd bird.ha ha
But I love this site and all you wonderful people!

Silpa, This is beautiful and a superb shot. You are lucky to have such a natural beauty. Lovely shot. Ganesh

Framed by branches and leaves of the guava tree, this cute little bird looks beautiful, Silpa.
In fact, it is the most natural portrait of a bird you have captured with dexterity.
The colours on the bird are very charming and the focus on the eye is immaculate -- a necessary condition in bird photography.
Well done and all the best.

Bonjour Silpa, to me this is such an exotic picture, from a dreamland! As much as you seem fascinated by winter here, I am with those amazing beautiful birds, colourful and so bright! To imagine you see one of these from your bedroom window is a spectacle to me. I would love to hear the sound they make, too. Your picture is superb, I like the shadow and light play and the beautifully saturated colours. Imagine, the green feathers are green like the leaves! AMitiés,

Francine

Hi Silpa.
Wonderful shot of an unknown for me and pictorial bird. Its image is looked in the frame created by rich leaves amazingly. Lights, detail, sharpness and colours are superb. And dark surroundings underline the beauty of the bird and scene perfectly. TFS and best regards. Well done.

Salam Silpa,
firstly, thanks a lot for coming into my post and you wrote beautifully on the development of my nature shots. Thanks a lot and how I like it and really appreciate you view.
This is such an excellent shot. I like the saturation and the richness of the shot.
Since we are using the same camera, to me it is really a great shot. The beautiful focus on the neck and the hues give a wonderful effect. Such a lovely one.
Looking forward to seeing more of your excellent shots, and being able to apply the readings from you little monster "SX10 IS".

regards,
Foozi
