LONG-TAILED SHRIKE: This small-medium size (10 inches or 25 cm) bird with grey crown and nape, pale rufous lower back and vent, buff under parts and prominent black band over the eyes like a musk is fairly common in India other than some parts of North-east region. The bird, also known as Rufous-backed and Black-headed Shrike (In eastern part of India the crown and nape is also black) or Lanius schach has strong hooked bill and long tail. Normally found in open lightly wooded scrub country, this species feed on grasshopper, large insects, lizard even small mice or birds. The birds can utter variety of calls, also expert in mimicry. In Delhi the birds can be located around the low lands beside Yamuna River and Asola.
Some other names are: In Hindi- Kajla latora; Tamil- Kattu kuruvi; Bengali- Kajal Pakhi.
