Friends,

I tried to capture the mating butterfly and also closein shot of their private parts. Hope I have not offended and I only try to push into more research part for the friends who study in their behaviour. Though the location of the shot doesnt enable me to get in more closer and also in the park many childrens were playing and I had to carefully shoot without disturbing their playful act.

Thanks for looking. I know I am irregular in my remarks and hopefully should be regular in a couple of days time.

Butterfly reproduction & Mating
---------------------------------

A butterfly's life has four stages. It starts as an egg, typically attached to the underside of a leaf. The egg hatches into the butterfly's larval form -- the caterpillar. A caterpillar's job is to consume enough food to sustain itself during its transformation into a butterfly. This transformation takes place in the butterfly's pupal stage, when the butterfly is inside its chrysalis. Finally, an adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. While the larval butterfly was built for eating, the adult is built for mating.

Butterflies reproduce the way other animals do -- sperm from a male fertilizes eggs from a female. Males and females of the same species recognize one another by the size, color, shape and vein structure of the wings, all of which are species specific. Butterflies also recognize each other through pheromones, or scents. During mating, males use clasping organs on their abdomens to grasp females.

Many male butterflies deliver more than just sperm to their mates. Most provide a spermatophore, a package of sperm and nutrients the female needs to produce and lay eggs. Some males collect specific nutrients to produce a better spermatophore in an attempt to attract a mate. Some females, however, don't have a choice -- in some species, males mate with females before they have left their chrysalis or swarm the chrysalis waiting for the female to appear. In most species, males and females look a lot a like, but females often have larger abdomens for carrying their eggs.

Interesting note
=================
An interesting item was carried on the Discovery Channel concerning butterflies and presented by Dr. Richard Wassersug. Japanese scientist were attempting to discover what mechanisms facilitated the mating of butterflies.

They discovered that males have light receptors at the end of their abdomens connected to their sexual organs. When these photo receptors are darkened, it is time to transfer sperm to the female.

During their experiments, they microcauterized and also painted over the light receptors. In these cases, reproductive success was cut in half. When painted over with clear paint, mating was successful. The butterflies also have mechanical/tactile receptors. The females also have light receptors, but these do not appear to have a role in copulation. Perhaps they play a roll in egg laying. Testing will have to be done. Moths do not have these photo receptors.

Hello Narayanan .You post a fine picture of the pair together. Your sharp focusing has given fine detail in the wing markings. With good use of the light showing the difference in the colours from the male to the female. A good POV/DOF. . well done TFS.

Hello Ganesh,
A superb capture of a pair of mating Long-tailed Blues ( Lampedes boeticus) taken from an ideal POV with excellent sharpness.
Interesting to see that the male lost his wing 'tails' when attacked by a bird that mistook it to be the eye and antennae. This saved his life and he could then fulfill it to pair up with a fine female to 'enjoy every moment' to quote your great philosophical title!
A great posting Ganesh and thanks for sharing it!

Hi Ganesh,

A wonderful capture of these mating butterflies. They seem to be doing a ritual dance on the yellow flowers. Details and colors of both the male and female are excellent.

Jane

Thank you indeed for this fine study in reproductive biology Ganesh, quite a "natural" part of nature we love! Your partly side-lighted subjects reveal the fine sculpturings of their wings, in addition to rich colour and pattern characteristics in this sharply focused lateral image. A perfect job my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Narayanan,
Excellent capture, with so much sharpness and nice colours. Very interesting note too. Best regards,
