SKIPPER BUTTERFLY

Insects in the family Hesperiidae (superfamily Hesperioidea) of the order Lepidoptera are commonly called skipper butterflies, after their quick, darting flight habits.

Skippers differ in several important ways from the remaining butterflies, which are classified in the superfamily Papilionoidea and the neotropical superfamily Hedyloidea. Collectively, these three groups of butterflies share several characteristics especially in the egg, larval and pupal stage (Ackery et al. 1999). However, skippers have the antennae clubs hooked backward like a crochet, whilst butterflies have club-like tips to their antennae and hedylids have feathered or pectinate antennae giving them an even more "moth"-like appearance than skippers. Skippers also have generally stockier bodies than the other two groups, with stronger wing muscles. Hesperioidea is very likely the sister group of Papilionoidea, and together with Hedyloidea constitute a natural group or clade.

There are about 3400 species of Skippers. They are usually classified in the following subfamilies:

Awls, Awlets and Policemen (Subfamily Coeliadinae, about 75 species)
Grass Skippers (Subfamily Hesperiinae, over 2000 species)
Skipperlings (Subfamily Heteropterinae, about 150 species)
Giant Skippers (Subfamily Megathyminae, about 100 species)
Spread-winged Skippers (Subfamily Pyrginae, about 1000 species)
Firetips (Subfamily Pyrrhopyginae, about 150 species)
Australian Skippers (Subfamily Trapezitinae, about 60 species)
Note: Some authorities treat the Giant Skippers as a separate family, the Megathymidae, but more modern classifications place them within the subfamily Hesperiinae in the family Hesperiidae.

Many species of skippers look frustratingly alike. For example, some species in the genera Erynnis, Hesperia, and Amblyscirtes cannot currently be distinguished in the field by experts, the only reliable method of telling them apart involving dissection and examination of the genitalia.

Hello Ram,
It looks like you're becoming a specialist on butterflies now! THis is a very fine view of a Skipper from a nice POV. Great DOF, excellent sharpness and natural colour. The composition is very beautiful, the orange flower and the green background complement the discreet colour of the Skipper very nicely.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hi Ram,
Like always your shot is clear and in deep of focus,I really love the contrast between the flower, the main object and the background, its obviously discreet and in a good composition. Worth to say there are skippers everywhere but this close up really enable me to see this butterly far more detail and show its behavioural routine respectively
Thanks for the great notes also

I think, thanks to you and a couple of others, I shall have a permanent imprint of this Skipper in my head. Coincidence? I bought a baseball cap yesterday at garage sale. It said on it Skippers. In truth an eatery here, but none the less.
Bob

Dear Ramthakur, Even though skippers are similar to the butterflies in most ways, I never had a chance to see a skipper extend its proboscis to sip nectar. Great sharp picture. Pleasant colors. Nice lighting.

Dear Ram,
You always give me kind words for me. Thanks a lot. :-) and I'm really glad to see you again.
You've taken very close-up shot with little butterfly. I think some species is very difficult to photograph. Well done and thanks for sharing. :-)

Hello Ram,
A very refined composition. Beautiful subtle colours and pleasant background. It is true, the skippers are so difficult to identify. Frustrating sometimes.
Thanks and best regards

Hello Ram,
Excellent portrait of a skipper of a species unknown to me. The sharpness is superb, as are the BG and composition with the cosmos flower. Pleasingly presented with a portrait-like frame.
TFS and have a good week,
