| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Being chosen by several states in India as their symbolic bird, the Indian Roller or Indian Blue Jay (Coracias benghalensis) enjoy a status in indian mythological stories - a local name is neelakant (meaning "blue throat"), a name associated with the deity Shiva (who drank poison resulting in the blue throat).
Blue Jay is a member of the roller family of birds that is found tropical southern Asia from Iraq to Thailand.
It is a stocky bird about 26-27cm long with brownish breast and blue crown and vent. It displays bright shades of blue in flight. Males are famous for their aerobatic dances to attract females for mating - thus giving them the name "roller".
These birds are usually seen perched on prominent bare trees or wires. They descend to the ground to capture their prey which may include insects, arachnids, small reptiles (including Calotes versicolor and small snakes) and amphibians. Shown in the picture is subspecies indicus. |
