Indian Mynah

Here is a note on this species from an Australian perspective:

The Indian mynah, Acridotheres tristis, (also known as the Common mynah, Common myna, Indian myna) has earned the reputation of being one of the worst feral animals in Australia. It's likely that if you live in Sydney, Melbourne, north Queensland or Brisbane, you're already familiar with them.

These little brown critters might look harmless but the World Conservation Union takes them very seriously. They put them in the list of the 100 most invading species in the world and describe them as an extreme threat to Australia. And humans don't get off easily either. Mynahs carry bird mites and have the potential to carry avian-borne diseases that are dangerous to people, not to mention the huge amount of droppings they leave under their communal roosting trees. Often gathering at night in numbers in excess of a thousand, these raucous birds can take over clumps of trees, especially around areas where lots of people go (where they encounter fewer predators) like shopping centres. In a short time their droppings can cover 100% of the ground and public seating under the trees. I speak from personal experience when I say you don't want to park your car underneath them.

What do they look like?

Indian mynahs are easy to recognise. They're about 25 cm tall(I have my doubts about this measurement. --Ram) and mainly chocolate brown, with a black head and neck, and a yellow beak. Some people confuse them with the noisy miner, an indigenous Australian species about the same size. The noisy miner is a honey eater indigenous to Australia, while the Indian mynah is part of the starling family and comes from India.

Hello Ram,
Nice capture of this rascal!
You present this Common Mynah from an unusual POV and have nearly achieved complete sharpness. Excellent lighting, colours and fine bokeh to set it off in a pleasing composition.
I have seen these dominating the suburbs of Syndey as well as in India and Thailand.

Well done and thanks,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Ram,
I think you've got the focus on the tail instead of the head! But never mind as I think this shot very nicely illustrates how a bird (and this is quite a big one) holds on to a thin wire with his feet. An incredible balancing act really! I like the light here and the colours are natural and beautiful. Fine plain background too.
Many thanks and have a nice weekend, Ulla

Hello Ram,
a nice portrait of this Mynah.
I would love to hear one of them because they mimic other noises really accurately.
Good composition.
Sharp and detailed.
DOF maybe a bit too shallow but only a minor nit.
Well done,
Joe

Hello Ram,
A fine capture of this Mynah.
We have a lot of these Indian Mynahs up in the North Island, where they are a bit of a pest, but in the South here there are none.
A couple of years ago I posted a (pretty poor) shot of a Mynah diving on a large rat in my garden Attack
I also had a friend in England with a Mynah that was trained to speak very well.
Grat post!
Cheers
Steve

Hi Ram, I am sorry to read this note slighting the Indian Mynah, I wonder is it exaggerated? Anyhow your shot and pov here is charming, you have captured the bird well showing good detail in the feathers and presenting a nice profile showing the bright yellow beak. Good light, colours and sharpness.

Dr. Ram Thakur,
Your note is most effective. Its message delivered LOUD & CLEAR.
We had trouble with this species in Maui, Hawaii where we had been assigned a parking stall under a beatifully leafed tree.
What a HEADACHE it turned out to be.!!!
Any way coming to your register: IT IS, simply put, GRAND.
Most friendly greetings,
Mario from COLD, COLD Calgary.
