Peacock Pansy
Junonia almana

I remember what a tough time this butterfly had given me last year. One hot and muggy afternoon, I had chased it around in a marshy area, never being able to get a close shot. Eventually, I had tried a distant one and this picture I am posting today is the result.
The only satisfaction I derive from it is that I have been able to capture the details on its not-so-attractive underwing, especially the eye-spots.

Anyway, here is a brief note on this butterfly:

The Nymphalidae is a family of about 5,000 species of butterflies.
These are typically fairly large butterflies, such as the emperor, admirals, tortoiseshells and fritillaries, which have very colourful wings. However, the underwings are dull and often look like dead leaves, which produce a cryptic effect that helps the butterfly disappear in its surroundings.
The front two legs are small, so these butterflies are effectively four-legged. The caterpillars are hairy or spiky, and the chrysalids have shiny spots.
Several species are attracted to Buddleia, a butterfly host plant.

The Peacock Pansy derives its common name from the prominent spots on its wings. It can be found gliding in sunlit grassy plains on the forest edges. It is not as common as in the past, where the species can be found in the company of the Blue Pansy in suburban gardens and open grassy patches.
The butterfly has a bright orange upperside with prominent eyespots on the hindwings. The undersides are somewhat paler, but with the eyespots still rather prominent.

Hi Ram,
Nice photo Ram, good colours and good detail. The flowers in the foreground are a little over exposed but still a good and well composed photo.
regards
Matt.

Hi Mr. Ram,
A beautiful shot. Well composed. Excellent POV and great note. Thanks a lot for sharing.

This is a very colourful image with the pansies looking like little lights.
It's well composed and actually is a really good example of how insect shots can still be detailed and in perspective without the aid of a macro lens.

Gary

hello mr thakur,

this is typical shot of yours when you were using the good old sony p 200. you have posted so many lovely shots with this kind of composition and the green bg. I feel like naming it ramthakurs bg (patent pending),jokes apart,

looks like this shot has been taken in harsh daylight as some of the flowers look overexposed, the pov is good & so is the composition,

The chasing of the butterfly is really tough sometimes, I have expereinced this while shooting my favourite tailed jay,

tfs & regards

pankaj

Hi Ram,
Wonderful portrait of the Peacock Pansy. The light is a bit harsh but you have managed it well. The entire frame is so colourful and eye-catching and it illustrates the habitat well. Very impressive shot considering all the trouble you did take. Butterflies are such a painful insects to shoot - but they are so beautiful and the satisfaction and joy of shooting one is non-pariel. Very nicely composed, framed and presented.
Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Ram

Very good colours and composition here Ram and as usual very good note.

James

Hi Ram,
A difficult exposure with the broad range of light in this scene. Some OE on the colorful flowers, but the rest looks good. Vibrant color saturation and sharp detail. The markings on the butterfly are excellent. Well composed and framed. It probably feels good to get this shot on an elusive subject you have been trying to capture. I have so many on my list that I am still hunting!
Scott

What an appropriate name. I like very much the ethereal effect. Background is much better for the subject, than living space couch:-)

A good shot despite lacking overall fine details, due to a high contrast scenario. The object of the image - the butterfly however came over very good. Well done!
