YELLOW COSTER
Acraea issoria (Hübner, 1819)

Friends, when I posted the first picture of this butterfly in 2006, Peter (Batu) identified it as Yellow Coster.
A bit of research on the net shows that this butterfly found mostly in India and South East Asia is considered to be uncommon.

According to Wikipedia, Yellow Coster belongs to the Acraeinae group under the main family Nymphalidae.
The Nymphalidae is a family of about 5,000 species of butterflies.
These are typically fairly large butterflies, such as the emperor, admirals, tortoiseshells and fritillaries, which have very colourful wings. However, the underwings are dull and often look like dead leaves, or are much paler, which produces a cryptic effect that helps the butterfly disappear in its surroundings.

Here is an abstract from a website in Hong Kong. The text has been slightly edited, mainly on account of linguistic errors.

A New Butterfly Species in Hong Kong - Acraeidae, Acraea issoria
On 17 August 2002, during butterfly survey at Plover Cove Country Park, an orange butterfly flew slowly across Hui Wing Leung, AFCD country park warden. Experience told him that this species is not common, which initiated him to take several photos on it. Meanwhile, that species was proven to be Acraea issoria, a new record in Hong Kong, which is also the first record in Acraeidae family.
They are medium-sized butterflies having narrow and elongated forewings and the forelegs are much reduced. Most species are brightly decorated with red, orange and yellow. Also, they fly weakly and not far from the ground. Larvae of Acraeidae have six or more rows of branched spines, their pupae are colourful.”

Hello Ram,
I see you are also diving into your archives and coming up with this uncommon Acraeid butterfly was a good move, not only because it is attractive and not often seen on TN, but also because of the high standard of the image, the sharpness and focusing directed to where it matters most. The bokeh green BG is a nice way of setting it off.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

A simple but effective shot of this Yellow Coster.
Nice composition and POV.
I like the shallow DOF and the BG is very well blurred.
Great lighting as well.
Well done Ram,

Joe

Ram,
Once again you have a well composed pic with clarity, sharpness, DOF, OOF BG and a good POV.

Keep up the excellent posts.

TFS,
Sheriff

Dear Ramthakur,

Excellent color combination. The contrasting colors coupled with smooth background make this picture very attractive. I wish the stalk on which the Yellow Coaster is resting is a bit diagonal. I had seen this butterfly at Kerala near Kodanad.

Murali Santhanam

Hola Ram,
Abundant or not, this is a fine b.fly specimen captured, as usual, expertly in good focus and rich detail my friend, that OOF monochromatic BG emphasizes the salient characteristics of the b.fly nicely. TFS and cheers...
